Update on the Armed Services Advice Project (ASAP)

Since July 2010, Turn2us and Citizens Advice Scotland have been working with Poppyscotland and other Armed Forces support groups to provide advice and support to members of the Armed Forces community in Scotland, through the Armed Services Advice Project (ASAP).

In the first 21 months of service, ASAP helped 1,769 clients with their advice needs, ranging from helping people to complete benefits applications and reschedule debt through to helping with housing issues and giving information on support with finding employment.

How ASAP works

Free, impartial and confidential expert advice on a range of topics is provided through Citizens Advice Scotland. It also acts as a first point of contact to help clients to access the extensive network of support and assistance that is available to the Armed Forces community, including Turn2us grants searches and benefits checks. The bureau service looks at all the problems a client is facing, rather than just taking one difficulty in isolation.

The project is co-funded by

  • Poppyscotland
  • Turn2us
  • The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund
  • The Maritime Charities Funding Group
  • ABF The Soldiers’ Charity
  • Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association – Forces Help (SSAFA Forces Help)
  • The Robertson Trust.

New e-learning tool for front-line advisers

ASAP has produced an e-learning tool to help front-line advisers understand how the uniqueness of military life can impact people, and provide information about the support structures that are additionally available to serving and ex-serving Armed Forces personnel. The tool can be accessed at
