Aged 16-25 and not in employment or education? - Turn2us

Information on the Prince's Trust's courses for young people (link opens in a new window)The Prince's Trust, a national charity that supports young people, are offering a free personal development course, the Team Programme, for 16-25 year olds who are not in work or education (NEET).

Stella Bell-Gam, Wandsworth Prince's Trust Team Leader, who has personal experience of the course, describes how it works in her area.

About the Prince’s Trust Team Programme

The Prince’s Trust 12-week Personal Development programme re-engages young people who are not in education or employment, helping them to get ahead and plan for their futures.

It’s one of the several opportunities that the Prince’s Trust is offering to support young people who may be finding their lives a struggle.

As well as young people who are unemployed, the Team Programme also works with young people who:

  • are ex-offenders
  • are young/lone parents looking to gain qualifications that will get them back on track
  • have learning difficulties/disabilities
  • are in the leaving care system.

If you are a young person who is unemployed, unexcited and unsure of your future, the Team Programme will get you going. It's free and will not affect those who are on Jobseeker's Allowance. It's the ideal course for young people whose lack of confidence or qualifications are holding them back from taking that next step onto their career pathway.

What happens on the course?

As part of the Team Programme, you will:

  • be part of a team of 15 people for 12 weeks
  • take on community projects and team challenges of your choosing
  • have an action-packed residential week which includes fantastic experiences such as abseiling, rock climbing, raft building, caving and much more!
  • get three weeks' work experience.

What's in it for me?

The course is aimed at helping the NEET groups to develop the skills needed to become employable and to increase their confidence in applying for jobs and going for interviews.

It will enable you to get:

  • Practical skills that help you in a job and in life
  • Inspiration and a new found belief in what you can accomplish
  • Career advice and help with job-hunting and your CV
  • The chance to make a difference in your community
  • A nationally recognised qualification in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills.
  • Improved chances of moving into a job education or training.

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a sure thing. It’s been going for over 20 years now and to date is rolled out in over 300 locations around the UK. Statistically more than 70% of unemployed participants go on to jobs, further education, apprenticeships or training once they’ve completed their 12 weeks. With a new found determination and self awareness, they are armed with the knowledge of what is on offer to them and how they can go about applying for these opportunities such as voluntary work abroad, work experience, apprenticeships, training schemes and jobs.

The Prince’s Wandsworth team is based at The Penfold Centre, 1 Neville Gill Close, London SW18 3DP.

There is a brand new team base at the STC Tooting Campus which has it’s next team start date on the 24th September.

The Wandsworth branch of the Prince's Trust has been running for over 10 years and is currently on its 49th Team. They have successfully helped over 450 young people through the 12 week programme and continue to do so with as much enthusiasm and vigour as they have from the start.

Personal experience

As a proud member of the Wandsworth 27 team, I can say the programme has truly changed my life. Since completing the programme, I have managed to pay off my debts and am now employed by STC to deliver the Team Programme.

I gained so much confidence and was able to realise my true potential. I also found that I liked the idea of doing work that helps to improve the community that I’m from, which I would never have really considered had I not done the programme myself.
