Cold calling

young woman on phoneThree-quarters of people want cold calling to be banned, according to a recent survey conducted by the consumer group, Which (link opens in a new window).

The study, which surveyed 2,092 people, found that British consumers receive an average of six cold calls a month. Two-thirds of people surveyed had received at least one unsolicited call within the last three months. Many of these are scams, but major companies, including British Gas, British Telecom and Sky, also use the tactic.

A quarter of people surveyed said they had felt intimidated by cold calls and one in five had felt pressured to buy something. Sixty percent of people hung up immediately on cold callers and 75% wanted the calls banned.

Consumers can opt not to receive cold calls by signing up to the Telephone Preference Service.

Re: Cold calling
I get about 3 cold calls from the so-called consumer survey centre, cannot find them online. They know my name, and when I ask how, they hand up on me, or they often call with hang-ups. The call number only comes up as "0208", that's all.
I already subscribe to the telephone pref.service, and yet I get loads of cold calls still, as the TPS cannot stop calls from abroad.
Re: Cold calling
Exactly the same, being bombarded with calls most obviously from an Indian call centre which usually come up as 'out of area'.The operator will not let you talk and when you eventually get a word in to mention the TPS, they hang up.
Re: Cold calling
The Consumer Survey Centre have rung me twice this week. Each time I have told them I don't want to take part in their survey this evening thank you and they hang up on me. How rude! I cannot find them online and I am registered for the TPS so they should not be calling me anyway. I hope they give up soon.
Re: Cold calling
I have also had numerous calls from them over the past few weeks. And yes, it is very hard to get a word in. Most of mine have been someone with an American accent.

Does anyone have any contact details - in order to complain?
Re: Cold calling
I also have at least one call a day from CSC. Once I told them very assertively not to call again but received two further very unpleasant pushy calls from the same so-called 'Kevin' within the hour. I receive between 3-6 silent/hang/up calls a day as well. Very stressful. I often say 'hold on' and leave the phone 'hanging', wasting their time as they waste mine. Old people are worried about such calls and this telephone spamming should not be a legal practice.
Re: Cold calling
I am now getting about 10 calls per night. Some are silent others are from an Indian man - usually called Bob, Tom or some other name they definately are not.Can this be stopped?

Re: Cold calling
I get calls most evenings from the Consumer Survey Centre, saying they want to do a one minute survey and say they need to confirm my address. I ask them who they are or why they need my address and they just hang up. Very sinister.
Re: Cold calling
Also getting these calls, 3 in the last half hour. And my husband says we've had a number of them last week.

We are on the TPS!
Re: Cold calling
I also get these calls but what is worrying they have my name and my address but it is my parents address that I haven't used for years!

Does anyone else find they have address details?

I was told I filled in a survey or something that got the details....
Re: Cold calling
I've just received one of these calls - their call centre is in the Phillipines (I recognised the accent and asked the agent). The TPS cannot stop you receiving 'marketing' calls from other countries if they are not conducting their business 'on behalf of' a UK based company. I let them go through their call script to see what they had to say - effectively, they want to gather as much information from you as possible to sell the data on to third parties who will then try to sell you stuff. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first question they asked was if I had Sky TV and if I had breakdown insurance cover on it. They then wanted to know the other typical things like home and car insurance renewal dates, what newspaper i read and all the rest. The number came up as withheld on my phone. All I can suggest is that you politely ask them to remove you from their database and to please never call again - if you're friendly and polite, the agent will be more likely to empathise with you and action it - if you're rude and angry with them, they'll probably log the call as an answer-machine out of spite so the automatic dialler will try you again and annoy you even further!

Re: Cold calling
Hopefully i have found the solution. I did a little research on the internet and found out that Consumer Survey Centres is owned by the following company http://www.phruit.co.uk/ . When I rang they were very pleasant and agreed to take me off their mailing list, I have yet to see if this works but if everybody pesters them and reports them to Ofcom maybe these nuisance calls will stop.
Cold calling
I've been receiving several calls a week from from this "company" for about 5 years. ithink there were 3 calls from them today alone. They always ask for someone I have never heard of and no matter how many times I tell them that that person does not live here, no matter how polite or down right rude I am, they just call back. When I ask for a name or ask to speak to a manager they hang up. I am so sick of this company!
Re: Cold calling
have just recieved another of these calls and have asked them to stop calling me and was told i will make sure u will be called again!! said i have to take part in the survey etc. this was my 2nd call today really need this to stop asap it's so annoying.. this is everyday this week so far
Re: Cold calling
I get 3-4 calls from these people everyday. I have asked them to stop calling and told them that I will report them for harassment. They carry on anyway! Frustrating.
Re: Cold calling
These guys have been driving me mad!

If the "consumer survey center" is run by www.phruit.co.uk then they have a page where you can enter details and opt out of their 'lifestyle survey'

http://www.phruit.co.uk/unsubscribe.html

This is the last thing im doing before making a complaint at ofcom. The address for the ofcom cold calling complaint page is :

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/telecoms/privacy/unsolicited-telesales-calls/

I will post back here if using the opt out form from phruit does not work.
'Consumer Survey Centre'
Call from these jokers this evening, we are ex-directory and registered with TPS but clearly that doesn't deter them. Caller had no idea what I meant when I asked for the actual company name, he just kept repeating that it was the "Consumer Survey Centre". I decided to play ball just to find out more about them (giving them Mickey Mouse answers, obviously!) but the very first question was to "confirm the postcode". I said, if you only need to confirm it, rather than ask for it, then he should tell me what he has for the postcode and I will confirm it if it is correct.

He hung up. TPS complaint lodged.
Called Multiple Times
Called several times in one day - ironically they have the name of a previous owner of my current number , and I have had it 7 plus years.

Registered with TPS - tried to log a complaint, however they are basically not interested as these are survey calls and they will only respond to "direct marketing" calls. will now try the ofcom link posted in this thread
Re: Cold calling
Consumer Survey centre, they say is based in harpenden, herts, nonsense. Soon as you ask for me details they hang up rudely! They are in the philippines. Called phruit.co.uk to complain, they took some details and assured me my number would be removed, but also gave me a 02071833127 number to call. Called that number, went international and died. Tried a few times. Around 15 mins later, got a call from philippines from 'shiela' saying she worked for five star quality call centre who does the consumer survey centre calls and assured me they would not call again. tried to do 1471, but strangely enough call back number was 00000!!
Re: Cold calling
Ok i definitely got these guys to stop calling by going to their website and unsubscribing to their survey. You just enter your detail and they stop calling. Its been 3 weeks since i did it and i haven't had a single call.

Just go here and enter your details

http://www.phruit.co.uk/unsubscribe.html

Problem solved :)
Re: Cold calling
The call centre that keeps making these calls, is calling on behalf of DLG, in Watford. Telephone them on 01923 281700 and the nice man will remove your number and the calls will stop. Simplss :-)
