A new poverty measurement tool, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) has been developed that gives a multidimensional picture of people living in poverty and may help target development resources more effectively.
The MPI was created through a partnership between Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at Oxford University and the United Nations Human Development Report Office (UNDP).
It provides a fuller portrait of acute poverty than simple income measures, its creators say, by assessing a range of critical factors at household level, including education, health outcomes, assets and services. The nature and extent of poverty at different levels – household, regional, national and international – are also captured along with distinct and broader aspects of poverty.
