Thousands of Jobseeker's Allowance claimants have huge debts that they have little hope of repaying, according to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).
The charity, which provides information and advice on debt, revealed that one in eight people who contacted it for help in the first half of 2010 (nearly 14,500 people) were on Jobseeker's Allowance. These had debts averaging £15,412 in unsecured debt each - owed to about five different creditors. Nearly one in four of these enquirers blamed their situation on job loss.
