Eligibility

Members or former members of the Mining Institute of Scotland who are taking a university course with a mining element in it. Applicants who are not already members of the institute will be invited to join. Members of the Mining Institute of Scotland, and their dependants, can also receive ‘hardship grants’.

Type of grants

Educational grants are one-off or recurrent, normally of £1,500 a year. A recent grant was made, for example, towards an engineering course that had a mining element to it. Grants can be for the student’s general upkeep, or for course fees, and so on.

Hardship grants are one-off or recurrent of up to £1,000 a year. A recent grant was made, for example, to the son of a member for travel to university.
