Children in need under 18 (usually Scottish) and students of nursery nursing living in the Lothians may be eligible for a grant.

One-off grants of £10 to £500 are given for safety items such as fireguards and safety gates, shoes, clothing, bedding, cots and pushchairs or as requested by a third party such as a social worker or health visitor on the child's behalf. Recent awards have included money for bus passes, recreational activities for young carers and washing machines for families where children have a medical condition which makes one essential.

No grants are given for holidays or household furnishings.

Applications should be submitted through a recognised referral agency such as a social worker, health visitor or GP to the Avenel Trust. They are considered every two months.
