Ataxia is the loss of coordination of parts of the body. It affects the parts of the nervous system that control movement and balance. Ataxia is also the name given to a group of neurological disorders called cerebellar ataxias. Neurological means that it relates to the nervous system. Common types of ataxias in the UK are Friedreich's ataxia and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6. Another less common type of ataxia is ataxia telangiectasia.
