The Commercial Travellers Benevolent Institution

Also known as The CTBI - The Salespeople's Charity.

An occupational benevolent fund offering financial assistance to those who have worked as commercial sales representatives / manufacturers agents.

Eligibility

People in the UK who are in need and have worked as a sales representative/agent promoting or selling to the trade for at least five years, and their dependants. Applicants must have been employed for a minimum of six months in each of these years. Sales must be business to business and involve the representative leaving their office and visiting client sites.

Exclusions

No help is given to those engaged in 'van sales' or who sell through retail outlets.

Type of grants

Recurrent grants and gifts in kind. One-off grants are also given towards respite breaks, disability aids, home adaptations, TV licences and for critical one-off payments.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Applications should include evidence of employment in commercial sales and be submitted either directly by the individual or through a third party. The trustees meet five times a year to consider applications, though emergency payments can be made quickly in cases of extreme hardship.

The Royal Signals Benevolent Fund

Members and former members of the Royal Signals, regular or territorial volunteer reserve, and their widows and other dependants.

Eligibility

Members and former members of the Royal Signals, regular or territorial volunteer reserve, and their widows and other dependants.

Exclusions

The fund does not distribute loans.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants according to need. Grants are given towards fuel and lighting costs, funeral expenses, domestic and medical appliances, carpets, house repairs, convalescence, nursing home top-up fees, priority debts, supplementary and Christmas allowances. Applications for amounts up to £600 may be decided between the funding committee meetings.

Applications should be made through SSAFA Forces Help or another charitable organisation and are considered as required.

The fund also gives funding to other service charities (£45,000 in 2010).

Professional Footballers’ Association Benevolent Insurance Fund

Current and former members of the association in England and Wales who are experiencing financial hardship and are on a low income.

Eligibility

Current and former members of the association and their dependants in England and Wales who are experiencing financial hardship and are on a low income.

Exclusions

No grants are made for cars, holidays or to set up businesses. Loans are not available to former members and there are no recurrent grants.

Type of grants

One-off grants in the range of £50 to £2,000 to help relieve financial difficulties such as the threat of losing a home due to mortgage/rent arrears or threat of bailiffs in respect of debts. Where appropriate, general advice regarding financial management and options concerning further education may be offered as required. There is also funding available in the event of the death of any member whilst under contract, up to a maximum of £1 million.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Completed applications should be returned directly by the individual or by a family member/social worker on their behalf. There are no deadlines and applications are considered as they are received.

Hospitality Action (formerly Hotel And Catering Benevolent Association)

Former and current workers in the hospitality industry in the UK. The individuals or the company they work for would need to have been involved in the direct provision of food, drink and accommodation away from home. e.g chef, hotel workers, bar/pub staff, kitchen porters, housekeeping, restaurant workers.

Eligibility

Former and current workers in the hospitality industry in the UK. The individuals or the company they work for would need to have been involved in the direct provision of food, drink and accommodation away from home. Individuals must have worked in the industry for one continuous year in the past five years or have worked for seven continuous years in their lifetime.

Exclusions

Funding is not available towards the following: private school fees, fees for educational courses, student maintenance, student loan repayment, most private medical treatments, legal costs, residential care fee shortages. Grants for property repairs or adaptations may be refused if equity release is a considered a viable option.

Only one grant per applicant in any twelve month period.

Type of grants

Essential Needs Grants

These grants are awarded for assistance towards the cost of an item or need considered essential for the well being or improving the quality of life of the applicant.

Crisis Grants

These grants are awarded to applicants of working age who have suffered a sudden loss of income due to bereavement, illness or injury. Awards are usually for a maximum of one year. The grant aims to assist with the general living costs of the applicant for a set time so that they have time to adjust to their new circumstances before returning to work.

Applications

On a form available from the website. If writing please include the individual's work history, savings available, evidence of income and specific need. Applications should be supported by an independent third party such as a social worker, Citizens Advice or other welfare agency. They are considered weekly. Decisions will be confirmed in writing.

Hospitality Action runs a programme which offers seminars on drugs and alcohol misuse.

It also has a contact scheme for retirees of the hospitality industry which includes a bi-monthly newsletter, regional lunches, befriending contacts and birthday card.

The Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund

People, or dependants of people, who are working in the building, civil engineering industry and allied trades, or unable to work in the industry because of ill health or disability in the UK or Republic of Ireland.

Application forms must be filled in via a third party, such as a Welfare Professional from the Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Eligibility

People, or dependants of people, who work or have recently worked in the construction industry, or in an industry associated with construction (e.g. civil engineering, demolition or design), in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants should have worked in the industry for at least two years, although not necessarily consecutively.

Exclusions

The maximum length of time for recurrent grants to be given is five years.

Type of grants

Recurrent grants to help towards living costs for those in need through accident, disability or ill-health and for those in need because a member of their family (who was in the construction industry) has died or has a fatal illness. One-off grants are also available towards essential items or services, such as a new bed, a replacement washing machine, funeral costs and school uniforms.

In the first instance contact the administrator or a branch welfare officer (a list of local branches is available on the fund's website) to receive a copy of the application form.

The fund works closely with Vitalise (see separate entry) to provide holidays for individuals with disabilities.

Exclusions

No loans are given and no help for part-time education.

Type of grants

Help is given in the following ways:

(i) Education: maintenance allowances or grants tenable at any school, college, university or other place of learning approved by the trustees. Most beneficiaries attend local state schools, or special schools in the case of disabled children, with parents awarded grants per term to cover books, equipment, travel and so on.

(ii) Careers: financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to help beneficiaries on leaving school, university or other educational establishment to prepare for or to assist their entry into a profession, trade or calling.

(iii) Travel: awards to assist beneficiaries to travel, whether in this country or abroad, in order to further their education and to participate in school-sponsored visits and field courses.

(iv) The arts: financial assistance to enable beneficiaries to study music or other arts.

(v) Continued education: in ot

Application forms may be obtained from the correspondent, and should be submitted directly by the individual. The grants committee meets five times a year. Note that no applications can be considered except those applying for the sons and daughters of travelling sales representatives or manufacturer's agents.

The REME Benevolent Fund

Members and former members of the REME who are in need, and their immediate dependants.

Eligibility

Members and former members of the REME who are in need, and their immediate dependants.

Exclusions

No grants for medical expenses, funeral expenses, litigation costs or debts.

Type of grants

One-off grants usually up to £1,000 for any need, however in exceptional circumstances larger grants may be made. For example, a recent grant was made to a REME staff sergeant who lost a leg in a traffic accident to help towards the cost of an automatic car. Annuities and help with nursing home fees are also available.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or a local branch of SSAFA or the Royal British Legion. Grants are only made through a third party (e.g. SSAFA/RBL), and applications made direct will be referred to a welfare agency for investigation. Applications are screened immediately on receipt and are either rejected on sight, referred back for more information or to a committee which meets every three weeks. Grants of under £500 can be paid immediately on receipt of a suitable application.

React (Rapid Effective Assistance for Children with Potentially Terminal Illnesses)

Financially disadvantaged families caring for a child under 18 years living with a potentially terminal illness.

Exclusions

No grants towards trips overseas, structural building works, private treatment or the purchase of vehicles.

Type of grants

Grants in kind and one-off grants ranging from £50 to £5,000. They can be made for domestic or medical equipment which may contribute towards the child's quality of life. A broad variety of items may be considered including carpets, furniture, kitchen appliances, clothing, bedding, toys, car seats, travel expenses, specialist chairs and beds, sensory equipment, wheelchairs and hoists, as well as mobile home holidays at one of six sites around the UK. The charity can also contribute towards hospital expenses such as food and travel and funeral and memorial expenses.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Forms must be completed and signed by a member of the family and endorsed by a medical or social care professional. Families are required to declare financial details and are asked to phone if in any doubt about eligibility. The charity aims to reply to every application within a few days, and the decision process in most cases takes less than a week.

Baron Davenport’s Charity

Baron Davenport's Charity supports needy widows, spinsters and divorcees aged 60 and over, ladies abandoned by their partners and their children, and people under 25 whose fathers are dead. Applicants must live in the West Midlands.

The Trust assists with bi-annual grants.

Grants are given to those who are in receipt of less than £150 a week and have less than £5,000 in savings.

All applications should be made in writing to Mrs Keenan.

Eligibility

Widows, unmarried women and divorcees aged over 60 and in need; women and children abandoned by their partners; and people under 25 whose fathers are dead. Exceptions may be made for younger widows with limited income and school-age children living at home who are in financial need. Applicants must have lived in the West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire or Worcestershire area within a 60 mile radius of Birmingham town hall for at least five years. Applicants must have a net income of less than £170 per week and savings that do not exceed £10,000.

Exclusions

Applications will not be accepted from those in receipt of Low/High Rate Attendance Allowance; Middle/High rates of Disability Living Allowance or Mobility Allowance (or car allowance).

Type of grants

Recurrent grants, typically of £200 to £230, paid twice annually. In very special circumstances one-off grants of up to £250 are given for varying cases of need.

Applications

Except for emergency cases, applications should be made through local authority social services departments or recognised welfare agencies, although direct applications from individuals may also be considered.

Application forms are available from the secretary or may be downloaded from the website and should be submitted by 15 March or 15 September. Grants awarded are paid in June and November.

Applications where prompt relief is needed should be addressed to the local Council of Voluntary Service, as listed under their separate entries.

Other information

The trust and CVS regard as fatherless those whose fathers are dead, and in some cases children abandoned by their fathers.

Grants are not normally given to cover the costs of private medical care, educational fees, bankruptcy fees, nursing/residential fees or for headstones or funeral plaques.

Grants are: 'To provide practical help and support in any form most appropriate to each individual applicant including one-off grants, ongoing budget balancing grants, clothing, house repairs (specific criteria), aids for disabled people, holidays, wheelchairs (specific criteria), television and telephone rental and so on.'

Applications

On a form available from the trust's website or by contacting the trust by phone. They can be submitted directly by the individual or through a social worker, Citizens Advice, other welfare agency or a human resources department. They are considered throughout the year.

The association also runs a sheltered housing scheme in Sellyoak, Birmingham and provides welfare advice.
