Young people under 21 who are British born, in financial need and resident in the old borough of Hove and Portslade for at least one year.

Type of grants

Recurrent grants according to need are made to schoolchildren and further and higher education students. Grants can be for clothing, books, equipment, educational outings in the UK, fees or living expenses.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent, either by the individual or through the individual’s school, college, educational welfare agency, or a third party such as health or social worker, solicitor, friend or relative. Applications are usually considered in March, June, August, September and December.

Exclusions

Grants are not given for other costs for schoolchildren such as books or for school fees, nor for people starting work, other than for equipment.

Type of grants

Grants are available for the cost of educational visits for schoolchildren and towards fees for extra-curricular activities such as music, the arts and social and physical training. A block grant only is given to further education students.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent, either by the individual, his/her parents, or through the individual’s school, college or university. Applications are considered once a year in November and must include valid receipts where applicable. Applications must be received before 31 October.

Eligibility

Further and higher education students, including mature students and occasionally postgraduates, who are studying in accordance with the doctrine of the Church of England. Preference is given to people studying teaching or religious education who are living in the dioceses of Bristol, Bath & Wells and Gloucester. In practice funding is absorbed by people who meet these preferences.

Type of grants

One-off grants usually ranging from £100 to £750. Grants can be for books, fees, maintenance/living expenses, childcare and for some study or travel abroad. Foreign students studying in the UK may also be supported (but not at postgraduate level).

Applications

Applicants should telephone in the first instance to discuss the nature of study and so on. Applications must be made on a form available from the foundation's website. They should be submitted directly by the individual by 1 January, 1 June and 1 September for consideration in February, July and October, respectively.

Other information

Grants can also be given to educational organisations and schools with a Christian focus.

Needy older mariners and their widows, currently living in or connected with Leith or Edinburgh (and not receiving assistance from other seafaring charities).

Emergency grants to ease financial hardship.

In the first instance a short application should be sent by email to welfare@sailors-society.org.

Other information

The society maintains a network of Chaplains at the various key ports around the world who carry out ship visiting routines and minister to seafarers. It also provides centres and clubs for seafarers and associated maritime workers at strategic seaports.

The society administers the Leith Aged Mariners’ Fund and the Dundee Seaman's Friend Society.

Type of grants

Grants of £200 to £500 towards a two or three week recuperative holiday in a hotel in Lytham St Annes or Southport (including rail travel expenses, bed, breakfast, evening meal and £25 in cash). Holidays are taken between Easter and September.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, supported by a certificate signed by a doctor. Applications should be submitted directly by the individual and are considered from January to April.
