The Elizabeth Allen Trust

Exclusions

No grants are made towards private school fees, for gap year activities or for purposes funded by the LEA.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £300 are made for specific needs (such as books, equipment and fees) and maintenance grants of up to £250 a term are paid for an academic year. Grants for educational outings in the UK are considered in exceptional circumstances.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent upon receipt of a stamped addressed envelope. Forms can also be obtained by leaving a message (including telephone number) on the trust’s answer phone. Applications must include details of parental finances and the use of the applicant’s student loan. The trustees meet five times a year to consider applications.

The trust states that the trustees' April meeting is realistically the last at which applications for the current year can be considered.

Type of grants

Pensions, currently around £425 per annum, are paid half yearly. Occasional one-off grants may also be given.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications should be returned by 31 March and 30 October for consideration in April and November respectively. Applications should be submitted through a social worker, Citizens Advice or other welfare agency, although direct applications will also be considered.

The Hale Trust

Young people under 25 years of age who live in Surrey, Sussex, Kent or Greater London.

The trust helps children whose are affected by the following issues:
(i) mental, physical or sensory disabilities

Young people under 25 years of age who live in Surrey, Sussex, Kent or Greater London.

The trust helps children whose lives are affected by the following issues:
(i) mental, physical or sensory disabilities
(ii) behavioural or psychological problems
(iii) living in poverty or situations of deprivation
(iv) illness, distress, abuse or neglect.

Bursaries are given to children under the age of 18 where there are medical requirements, family problems, special educational needs or limited funding.

Exclusions

No grants for unspecified expenditure, deficit funding, the repayment of loans or second degrees/postgraduate work.

Type of grants

Grants are usually one-off and given towards: (i) school fees, educational outings and books for schoolchildren; and (ii) books for students in further and higher education. Bursaries of £400 per term are also available for people under 18, but they cannot exceed £1,200 a year per individual, or last for more than three years. Grants are paid to the school and not the individual.

Applications

Applications can be submitted through the individual's school, college or educational welfare agency. Applicants for one-off grants should write to the correspondent, at the address below. They should preferably be submitted in time for the trustees' meetings in February, June and October.

Applicants for bursaries should apply to: Mrs Sheila Henderson, Foyle Farm, Merle Common, Oxted, Surrey RH8 9PN. The trust aims to interview all applicants for bursaries. Grants are paid to the school.

Other information

This trust also supports charities concerned with the advancement of education of children who are disabled or disadvantaged.

Church Schoolmasters and Schoolmistresses' Benevolent Institution

The CSSBI provides a wide range of support for teachers or retired teachers and their dependants throughout England and Wales who are members of the Church of England or other Christian denominations who are in need.

Grant application forms can be obtained from Church Schoolmasters and Schoolmistresses' Benevolent Institution and should be submitted by or on behalf of the individual. Applications are considered upon receipt.

Eligibility

Present, former or trainee teachers and their dependants throughout the UK who are in need.

One-off grants according to need.

On a form available to download from the website www.cssbi.org.uk to be submitted directly by the individual or a family member. Applications are considered upon receipt.

Other information

During 2011 the members of the charity resolved to adopt update charitable objectives which have largely modernised and widened the Charity's remit.

  • Students leaving school or further education for equipment and clothing, which will help them enter, or prepare for, their chosen profession or trade
  • People starting work for maintenance and living expenses and childcare
  • Education designed to prevent juvenile delinquency, the abuse of drugs, alcohol and gambling, the procreation of unwanted children and the neglect or ill-treatment of children.

One-off grants of £80 to £100 mainly in the form of payments to suppliers for essential furniture and household items, including cookers, washing machines, beds and baby items.

Applications can only be accepted from a recognised referral agency (e.g. social worker, Citizens Advice or recognised advice agency) and are considered throughout the year. The trust encourages applicants who wish to telephone to leave a message on the answer phone if there is no reply as messages are listened to daily.
