The Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship Fund

Individuals working in all areas of movement and dance. Scholarships are awarded to dancers (ballet dancers and commercial dancers), choreographers, administrators, teachers, therapists, journalists, photographers and others. Travel must originate in, and return to, the UK.

Eligibility

Individuals working in all areas of movement and dance who wish to travel abroad or in the UK.

This includes:

  • Ballet dancers
  • Choreographers
  • Commercial dancers

 

Exclusions

The following are not supported: fees for courses or conferences are not paid; fees or travel for 'long' courses, e.g. courses extending over one, two or three years; these include, for example, most diploma, certificate, degree and postgraduate courses; individuals under the age of 18; projects which directly support the work of companies, institutions or organisations; set up costs of projects or festivals; those not resident in the UK for a minimum of two years continuously prior to the application; previous recipients of LUTSF scholarships are considered for a second award only after at least five years have passed and/or in exceptional circumstances.

Type of grants

Scholarships are awarded to fund the travel of individuals abroad or in the UK to attend conferences, to pursue a research project, or undertake a short course of study in the field of movement or dance.

Applications

On a form available from 1 September from the fund's website. Four signed copies of the form must be sent by post to arrive no later than 25 January. Forms not received by this date cannot be considered. Forms sent by email or fax are not acceptable. Applicants are informed of the outcome of their application by the end of March, and scholarships winners may travel from April onward.

Children of people who: (i) were born or educated in the former royal burghs of Dundee, Forfar, Arbroath and Montrose; or (ii) have been resident in one or more these burghs for five years immediately before applying for an award or immediately before his/her death.

Exclusions

Grants are not given to people with an income of more than £10,000, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants of up to £200, usually for maintenance/living expenses. Grants are reviewed each year. Emergency grants are available to allow pupils to continue their education following some family crisis.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, for completion on behalf of the applicant with full details of their financial situation. Applications are usually considered at May and November meetings.

Widows, widowers and dependents of deceased members of the clergy who live in, or have worked in, the diocese of Truro. Retired Anglican clergy who are in need and have links with Truro are also eligible for support.

No grants for assistance with school fees or university fees.

Type of grants

Grants are one-off and occasionally recurrent according to need. Recent grants have ranged from £50 to £500 and included funding for dentist's fees, spectacles, travel to hospital and assistance with equipment for people with disabilities.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent. Applications can be submitted directly by the individual or through a relative or a carer. They are usually considered monthly.

Eligibility

People in need who live in Glasgow and are undertaking education which enhances the cultural and social fabric of society with a view to meeting unmet local needs which are not municipal, governmental or religious.

Exclusions

Grants are unlikely to be made to people at Glasgow or Strathclyde Universities or Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Dance as the trust makes block payments to the hardship funds of these institutions. Grants are also not normally awarded towards medical electives, second or further qualifications, payments of school fees or costs incurred at tertiary educational establishments.

Type of grants

One-off grants ranging from £100 to £1,000 to schoolchildren for study/travel overseas, books, equipment/instruments and maintenance/living expenses, to college students, undergraduates, vocational students and mature students for fees, study/travel overseas, books, equipment/instruments, maintenance/living expenses and childcare, to overseas students for fees, books, equipment/instruments and maintenance/living expenses and to individuals with special educational needs for excursions.

Applications

An application form to be submitted together with a summary in the applicant’s own words, extending to no more than a single A4 sheet, of the purpose and need of the grant. The possible costs and financial need should also be broken down.

The trustees meet four times a year normally in March, June, September and December, but this can vary. All applications should be submitted one month prior to the meeting.

It is a condition that with any grant given, a report should be made as to how the funds have been used. Grants not used for the purposes stated must be returned. Applicants receiving help one year may expect to be refused in the next.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £500 are available to school children and further and higher education students for school clothing, books, equipment, instruments, fees, maintenance and living expenses and educational outings in the UK.

Applications

By letter which should contain all the information required as detailed in the guidance notes for applicants. Guidance notes are available from the correspondent or the website. Applications must be submitted through a social worker, Citizens Advice, probation service, school or other welfare agency. They are considered quarterly.
