One-off and recurrent grants to help with the cost of books, clothing, educational outings and other essentials for those at school.

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications can be submitted by the individual, his/her head teacher or a social care worker. Applications should include full details of what funds are requested, and are usually considered between April and June although urgent cases can be considered at any time.

Eligibility

Residents of the former county of Aberdeen and schoolchildren and students whose parents reside there.

Type of grants

Grants of approximately £200 are available to individuals going on to study further education for travel, fees, books, equipment and so on. Support is also given towards school trips and annual school prizes. There is a preference for education in the visual arts, music and drama. Support is given to people starting work or apprenticeships. Grants may be awarded for post graduate research or special study.

On a form available from the correspondent, to be considered throughout the year. All applications are means tested so applicants must provide documentary evidence of income from the last tax year.

Type of grants

Grants may be spent on study visits connected with research on Swedish literature. Grants may also be used for translations and publishing subsidies and so on.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent, outlining your project or activity and stating required funding and any other sources of funding. Applications must be received by the 1st May or the 1st November.

Other information

The foundation established the Bernard Shaw Translation Prize which awards £2,000 every three years for the best translation into English of a Swedish Work. This prize is administered by the Society of Authors.

The charity is unable to help towards the cost of undergraduate degree courses. Equally, grants are not given in any circumstances where the trustees consider the award to be a substitute for statutory provision.

Usually one-off grants according to need, for things such as, help towards travel costs, the provision of equipment to undertake a course or help towards actual course fees, depending on the nature of the course and the individual's personal circumstances.

On a form available from the correspondent. Once received the application will be looked at in detail by an education officer. It is possible that the charity will visit, or ask applicants to call in at this stage. Applications are considered every month and can be submitted directly by the individual or through a third party such as a teacher.

Eligibility

Children and young people in need who are under 25 and live in the Highlands.

Exclusions

Grants are not given for postgraduate study, to pay off debts, nor to purchase clothing, footwear, food, furniture or cars and so on.

Type of grants

One-off grants of £50 to £500 are available for the following purposes:

  • student hardship funding
  • school or educational trips
  • family holidays
  • educational items for children with special educational needs
Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or downloaded from the website, where criteria and guidelines are also posted. They can be submitted at any time either directly by the individual or through a social worker, Citizens Advice or other welfare agency. Applications must include details of income and savings and are considered at board meetings held on a regular basis.

No funding is given to organisations.
