Eligibility

Christians of any nationality who wish to train in healthcare, or gain an additional medical qualification in order to help the group or community they are working with in a developing or marginalised country. Applicants must be sponsored by a recognised Christian society or community. The trust also asks that applicants be in full agreement with its 'Statement of Faith', which is available to view on the website.

Exclusions

No support for basic professional medical training, for example courses leading to qualification as a doctor, nurse, midwife, dentist, and so on, nor training for work which cannot be considered as involving 'hands on' contact with patients for example administrators or pharmacists.

Grants towards the costs of training.

On a form available from the trust. Applicants should read the guidelines and agree with the statement of faith before requesting an application form. Forms must be returned electronically wherever possible.

Eligibility

UK and Irish nationals, aged between 18 and 35, who are horticulturists or botanists or those in their first five years of a career in horticulture who wish to extend their knowledge of plants, gardens and gardening by travelling. Other nationalities are only eligible if they are studying full time at a UK horticultural establishment.

Exclusions

Grants are not given towards postgraduate study or to fund highly technical laboratory-based research.

Type of grants

Grants towards visiting gardens in different parts of the country or abroad, or travelling to see wild plants in their native habitats. Both long and short term projects are supported. Previous support has been awarded for an expedition to southern Chile to observe the range of beautiful plants, a trip to New York's community gardens and a visit to Peru in search of orchids.

Applications

Application forms are available to download from the website. The form should be completed and emailed to the secretary along with a one page description of your project and a CV. A signed copy of the form should also be posted to the secretary. The trust welcomes telephone enquiries.

The McAlpine Educational Endowments Ltd

Schoolchildren aged 13 to 18 who are in need.

Exclusions

There are no grants for students at college or university, nor for people at specialist schools (such as ballet or music schools, or schools for children with learning difficulties).

Type of grants

Grants of up to £1,800 a year, mainly towards the cost of independent school fees for children of academic ability, sound character and leadership potential who, for reasons of financial hardship, would otherwise have to leave the school. Grants are paid each term while the child is at school (subject to an annual review) and are limited to children attending 10 schools selected by the trustees.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent. Applications must be submitted through one of the 10 schools where applicants are supported by the trust but, because of the long-term nature of the trust’s commitments, very few new grants can be considered each year. Applications are considered during the summer before the new academic year. A list of the schools involved is available from the correspondent.

The Manchester District Nursing Institution Fund

The fund is a registered charity which provides relief for people on low income who are sick, convalescent, or disabled by providing or paying for items or services which are calculated to alleviate suffering or assist in recovery.

Eligibility

People with health related needs in the cities of Manchester and Salford and the borough of Trafford.

Type of grants

One-off grants. It is important that the request is directly related to the health issue of the applicant and is not related to a general condition of poverty.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent which must be completed by a sponsor from a recognised social and/or health agency. Trustees meet monthly and the deadline for any meeting is the first Wednesday of the month.

The Manchester Jewish Federation

Jewish people in need who live in Greater Manchester including Bury, Salford, South Manchester and North Manchester.

Eligibility

Jewish people in need who live in Greater Manchester.

Type of grants

Small grants of up to £100 to people on low income or one-off help with utility bills, childcare support, respite care, essential household items and the additional food costs of Passover and other religious festivals. The federation also provides help for children’s holidays and playschemes and help to re-establish within the community i.e. removal.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, submitted directly by the individual or, with the applicant’s permission, through a social worker, Citizens Advice, other welfare agency or other third party. Applications are considered throughout the year. A referral and advice officer is available each day from 9.30 to 12.30 to discuss requests for financial assistance (call 0161 795 0024 for North Manchester or 0161 941 4442 for South Manchester).

Other information

Other services are also provided, including a full social work service, a centre for people with mental health needs, respite support for parents of children with special needs, a carer’s helpline, a luncheon club, a toy library and other help for people who are isolated or housebound.
