Eligibility

Young people aged 5 to 25 who live work or study in the Old Borough of Finsbury (now part of Islington), with a preference for those resident in, or whose parents have, during the preceding year had their business or employment in the Parish of St Luke.

Type of grants

The fund covers a wide range of educational purposes giving grants towards, for instance, school, college or university fees and books, travel and other equipment expenses, for people wishing to study music and the arts and for those preparing to start work.

The Sir W W Butler Welfare Fund

Students over the age of 11 who live in the city of Birmingham and the borough of Smethwick.

Eligibility

Students over the age of 11 who live in the city of Birmingham and the borough of Smethwick. Preference is given to those who are children of an employee or ex-employee of the brewery industry including licensed retailing, catering and hotel management or who are undergoing training in these areas.

Type of grants

Grants in the range of £150 and £400 are given to: schoolchildren, college students, undergraduates, vocational students, mature students and people with special educational needs. Grants given include those towards uniforms/clothing, fees, books, equipment/instruments, and maintenance/living expenses.

Applications

Applications for the welfare fund can be made on a form available from the website. There is a preference for applications supported by a letter from a teacher or educational welfare officer etc. Applications can be submitted between April and June. Applications to the scholarship fund should be made through Leeds Metropolitan University.

Church Tenements Charity – Education Branch

Eligibility

People under the age of 25 who are living or studying in the London borough of Croydon, including people from overseas studying in Croydon.

Type of grants

'The trustees have a limited amount of funds at their disposal. They are therefore inclined to apply the trust income to exceptional or extraordinary cases of hardship or circumstance. They will generally favour an application below £500 where a grant has not been given previously by the local education authority. Grants are wide ranging but mainly cover primary, secondary or post-school education and training. Grants may also be given towards the cost of uniforms, equipment, musical instruments and tuition etc.' Grants can also be for books, stationary, school fees, educational outings in the UK and study or travel abroad. They range from £50 to £500.

Whilst no preference is given to any type of application, the trustees will be encouraged to give grants if the applicant has made some effort to raise some finance him/herself.

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications are considered quarterly in January, April, July and October. The trust asks for as much supporting information as possible.

Applications should not be made directly to the correspondent. Individual applications should be made on behalf of the child by his or her school, as part of a block application by the school on behalf of all of their pupils who wish to apply. Such block applications should be submitted to the correspondent, by the school, by 25 October, for consideration at a meeting on 20 November. Grants are then distributed via the school.

Other information

Grants are also made to local schools and to individuals and groups for the purchase of equipment, to help fund recreational projects and holiday schemes.

Grants are awarded to: (i) schoolchildren for books and educational outings but not clothing, uniforms or fees; (ii) students in further/higher education for books, fees, living expenses and study and travel abroad, but not to foreign students or for student exchange; and (iii) mature students for books and travel but not fees or childcare.

Applications

Applications should be submitted by the individual, or through a social worker, Citizens Advice or other welfare agency. The trustees meet in February and November. Urgent applications can be considered between meetings in exceptional circumstances.

Other information

Grants are also given to local schools at Christmas and to individuals for welfare.
