Type of grants

Grants have been awarded mostly after parental application towards the cost of items as diverse as school visits, music lessons, examination fees and special equipment for projects required on certain courses. Grants are also available for students in higher and further education, apprentices and people starting work.

The Elmhirst Trust

People who live in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, normally over the age of 30, seeking to develop their life in new directions and who are prevented from doing so by low income.

Eligibility

People who live in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, normally over the age of 30, seeking to develop their life in new directions and who are prevented from doing so by low income. Particular emphasis is given to those whose proposals benefit the community as a whole. Applicants may be undertaking vocational training or retraining in any subject, and must be in need of financial assistance to support them in their training. The trust strongly prefers to support people who have had little or no post-16 education and are involved in the voluntary sector to offer them a second chance of personal or vocational development.

Type of grants

One-off grants range from £100 to £850 which has previously been spent predominantly on fees but also on travel, books, equipment and childcare.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. ‘A response, by telephone or post, is made to all applicants and where applications are considered an assessor visits the applicant. The trust attempts to maintain contact with beneficiaries during their course/activity and thereafter.’

One-off grants of cash or equipment according to need. Recent grants have been given towards beds, school equipment, televisions and decorating costs.

On a form available from the correspondent, to be submitted through one of the visiting staff of the society. Applications are considered on a regular basis.

Other information

The society visits each of its 415 members 3-4 times a year and also provides six social centres, a resource centre, subsidised holidays and a mini bus service.
