Frank Denning Memorial Charity

Full-time students at colleges of further education who live or whose parents/guardians live in the London Borough of Croydon. Applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 25 on 30th March in the year the application is considered.

Type of grants

One-off travelling scholarships of up to £1,000 each for travel abroad to carry out projects which have specific educational objectives. Beneficiaries must have every intention of returning to the UK at the end of their overseas visit.

Applications

On a form available from the website. Forms are available from June and must be returned by the individual by 2nd March for consideration in March/April. A handout is sent to all Croydon students giving information on the charity. Interviews are held each year during the Easter holidays.

Exclusions

Grants are not given for aid that can be met specifically by public funds, for private education or if the grant would affect a claimant's benefit from the DWP.

Type of grants

One-off grants, generally between £50 and £100, are given as Christmas bonuses for people who are older, to families with parents suffering serious illnesses and for particular needs.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent, to be submitted either directly by the individual or through a social worker, Citizens Advice or other welfare agency. Applications can also be submitted via a trustee. They are generally considered in November, although specific cases can be considered at any time.

People who are studying, or have studied, international relations (or international law) at an institution of higher education in the UK. Applicants should be 25 years or younger on 1 April of the year they are applying, although other people can receive grants if they are able to put forward special reasons for their delayed education.

Exclusions

No grants to assist with fees or maintenance costs for people studying international affairs.

Type of grants

Awards are 'given to support a specific project (such as a research visit to the headquarters of an international organisation, to a particular country or a short course at an institution abroad) which will assist the applicant in his or her study of international affairs in relation to the purposes and work of the United Nations'.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent by 1 April. The letter should be supported by a short cv, a statement of career intentions and a description of the project for which the award is sought, with an estimate of its total cost and the sources of additional funding if required. (Preference will be given to applications where the award will cover all or the greater part of the project.) An assessment by a person in a position to judge the applicant in his or her suitability for the award is also necessary. All of this information should be submitted with four other copies, in typed form, only using one side of the paper.

Jewish people with HIV/AIDS.

Eligibility

Jewish people with HIV/AIDS.

Exclusions

No grants are given towards rent, mortgage arrears, luxury items or repayments of loans, debts or credit cards.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £500 a year are available from the trust, which may share the cost of major items with other agencies. Recent grants have been given towards Passover food, travel expenses for respite care, washing machines, cookers, moving costs and so on.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. All referrals must be through a professional person such as a social worker, health visitor and so on. A referral must accompany every application and be on headed paper including client's name, date of birth, detailed breakdown of weekly income, details and nature of request, name, position and signature of referrer and details of whom the cheque should be made payable to. First applications require symptomatic proof of HIV diagnosis from the applicant's doctor.

Other information

The trust was established to educate Jewish people about HIV and also provide support for those affected by it. The trust also carries out research into sex and relationships education in schools and manages sexual health information workshops in Jewish schools, clubs and in Jewish student unions in the UK.
