The Aldo Trust

Type of grants

Education grants of £10 to help with items such as books, course fees, equipment, audio/visual and other training equipment and tools for employment. Those eligible can only receive one grant a year.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications must be made through prison service personnel (for example, probation, chaplaincy, education), and should include the name and number of the prisoner, age, length of sentence and expected date of release. No applications direct from prisoners will be considered. Applicants may apply once only in each twelve-month period, and applications are considered monthly.

British citizens, those granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK and asylum seekers who are living in a condition of social or economic deprivation. Preference is given to the following groups:

  • orphans (a child who has lost either both parents or one parent who was the main bread-winner in the family)
  • children and young people under the age of 19 years (particularly those in care or who are carers themselves)
  • individuals who are disabled, incapacitated or terminally ill (particularly those who are severely mentally disabled)
  • single parents (particularly divorcees and widows/widowers with children)
  • estranged or isolated senior citizens
  • individuals with severe medical conditions or their families
  • ex-offenders or reformed drug addicts or alcoholics
  • victims of domestic violence and/or physical or sexual abuse
  • victims of crime, anti-social behaviour and/o
    Exclusions

    No grants for: general appeals; applicants who are not claiming all available benefits; retrospective funding; expenses relating to the practice or promotion of religion; debt, including council tax arrears; fines or criminal penalties; university tuition fees; gap year trips; building work or construction projects; funeral expenses; gifts (including birthdays and festivals); vehicles; and, holidays or recreational outings, unless they serve a medical, social or educational need. No support is given to those who have received a grant in the last twelve months.

    Type of grants

    Mainly one-off grants ranging from £200-£250, though in some cases up to £500 may be awarded. Grants are available both for subsistence costs and those which help break the cycle of poverty by encouraging educational attainment and employability.
