The British Polio Fellowship

People in need who have been disabled through poliomyelitis (polio) and live in the UK.

Eligibility

People in need who have been disabled through poliomyelitis (polio) and live in the UK.

Exclusions

No grants are given for hospital expenses, household bills or home carers. Statutory sources e.g. Social Services, Social Fund must be approached before approaching the fellowship.

Type of grants

Welfare grants of up to £500 are given for scooters, electric or manual wheelchairs, riser/recliner chairs, specialist beds and mattresses; household aids and equipment to enable independence; and, home and car adaptations. Support may occasionally be given for essential home improvement and crisis prevention.

Grants of up to £100 are awarded each autumn to help with heating costs for those who are not eligible for state assistance.

The average holiday grant is £300, though it may not exceed £500. Call or email holidays@britishpolio.org.uk for more information and to request an application form.

Applications

Welfare and heating grant forms are available from the correspondent or a local branch welfare officer. Applications should be submitted by the individual or by an appropriate third party on their behalf and include a medical certificate or doctors note stating polio-disability. Welfare applications are considered throughout the year. Heating grants are awarded once a year in the autumn.

Holiday grant forms are available from the correspondent or by emailing holidays@britishpolio.org.uk. They are assessed every other month.

The fellowship has over 50 local branches and provides support and advice on a wide range of issues affecting people disabled through polio.

The Charles Wallace India Trust

People of Indian nationality and citizenship, aged between 25 to 38, normally resident in India and intending to return to India at the end of their study. Certain short-term awards are available for people aged between 25 to 45.

Exclusions

Studies relating to economic development or leading to professional legal, business or administrative qualifications are not considered.

Type of grants

Only in the arts and humanities, with particular emphasis on fine arts, music, theatre, crafts and design, conservation of historical buildings and materials, anthropology, the preservation of archives, letters, history and the history of ideas.

Most awards are at postgraduate level to supplement other sources of funding or constitute completion of study awards for those whose scholarships have run out. A limited number of post-doctoral or post-professional research grants are awarded.

ATS & WRAC Benevolent Fund

Former members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War and the Women’s Royal Army Corps between 1949-1992 who are in financial hardship or who are disabled or have mobility problems.

Eligibility

Former members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War and the Women’s Royal Army Corps between 1949-1992 who are in financial hardship or who are disabled or have mobility problems.

Type of grants

One-off grants to those in need. The fund can also help with making up the shortfall for nursing home fees and supports some annuitants who receive regular payments throughout the year. Some annuities (around £20 per week) continue to be paid through the Princess Royal Memorial Fund.

Applications

All applications for financial assistance should go through the Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Families Association (SSAFA) or the Royal British Legion caseworkers who will visit the applicants and submit whatever forms are necessary.

If you feel that you might qualify for financial assistance, please apply to your local Royal British Legion or SSAFA office in the first instance.

Royal Theatrical Fund

People in need who have professionally practised or contributed to the theatrical arts (on stage, radio, film or television or any other medium) for a minimum of seven years, or dependants of such people.

This includes:

Backstage staff including stage managers

Singers in musical theatre

Theatre directors

 

 

Eligibility

People in need who have professionally practised or contributed to the theatrical arts (on stage, radio, film or television or any other medium) for a minimum of seven years, and the relief of families or dependants of such people.

Exclusions

No grants are made to students or towards courses or projects.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants of £250 to £3,000 are given towards domestic bills, monthly allowances, shortfall in nursing and residential fees, car tax, stairlifts, computers, insurance, TV licences and so on.

Applications

On an application form available from the correspondent. Alternatively by letter outlining your difficulties and how the fund might be able to help. You should include a letter of support from your GP, consultant or attach a current medical certificate if appropriate as well as a full CV or details of your theatrical career. Applications can be submitted at any time. The welfare committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month except August to consider applications. Telephone enquiries are welcome.

The fund works in collaboration with a number of sister organisations which they refer an applicant to if they cannot help themselves.

The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) Benevolent Fund

Members and former members of the association who are in need, and their dependants.

Eligibility

Members, former members and the dependants of members, former members and deceased members, provided a subscription has been paid o the union. Applicants should have less than £5,000 in savings and investments (though this limit may be waived in extenuating circumstances).

Exclusions

No grants/loans available for private health care or dental treatment, private school fees, student loans, legal fees, house purchase or to repay money owed to friends or family. Assistance is not given if it would affect the applicant’s entitlement to means-tested state benefits.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants and interest-free loans according to need. Recent grants have been given to people with terminal illnesses to visit relatives; to pay for the services of an occupational therapist to assess disability home conversion needs; to buy a converted vehicle for a member who is paralysed; and a monthly grant to a member's widow with no occupational pension.

Applications

Potential applicants should either contact their local association secretary or the correspondent to arrange a meeting with a benevolence visitor. The visitor will complete an application form with the individual and submit a recommendation to the benevolence committee. The committee meets monthly (except August) to consider new applications. However, emergency cases can be processed more quickly.

Other information

Grants totalling £11,000 were also made to 20 NASUWT Federations in the year.

Morden College

In addition to providing the elderly with living accommodation we provide grants and donations to older people suffering financial hardship and who fall within our area of benefit.

Eligibility

People in need who are aged over 50, from a professional or managerial background, who have retired from paid employment either on medical grounds or because they have reached the statutory retirement age.

Exclusions

The trust does not give for nursing home top up fees or any services or products which should be funded by statutory authorities.

Type of grants

Quarterly allowances and one-off grants of between £200 and £1,000 towards household items, holidays and convalescence.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, for consideration throughout the year. Applications can be submitted either directly by the individual or through any third party.

Other information

Morden College is the general title used for the administration of Sir John Morden's Charity and Dame Susan Morden's Charity. Sir John Morden's Charity provides grants and accommodation for the elderly. Dame Susan Morden's Charity is primarily concerned with the advancement of religion by assisting the Church of England with the upkeep of their churches and associated activities.

Morden College is a charity providing accommodation in Blackheath, London and Beckenham, Kent to elderly people suffering financial hardship; the charity is also able to make grants and donations to such people falling into its area of benefit and who do not require living accommodation. Potential beneficiaries are people in need who are aged over 50 from a professional, managerial or supervisory background who have retired from paid employment on medical grounds or because they have reached the statutory retirement age.

Radio Forth Cash for Kids Appeal

Children under the age of 18 who have special needs and live in east central Scotland.

Eligibility

Children under the age of 18 who have a disability or are disadvantaged and live in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife.

Exclusions

Generally holidays are not funded except for in exceptional circumstances.

Type of grants

Grants are given towards clothing, hospital expenses and medical and disability equipment.

Applications

Application forms are available from the correspondent or to download from the website. A letter of support is required from a GP, health visitor, social worker, occupational therapist or other professional involved with the child who can support the claim. Trustees meet four times a year to consider applications.

The Blanchminster Trust

People who live in the parishes of Bude, Stratton and Poughill (the former urban district of Bude-Stratton).

Eligibility

People who live in the parishes of Bude, Stratton and Poughill (the former urban district of Bude-Stratton).

Type of grants

Generally one-off grants up to a maximum of £25,000 for the relief of need, hardship or distress, for example for clothing, food, electrical goods, furniture, medical care and equipment, and travel to and from hospital.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications are considered monthly and should be submitted directly by the individual. Where possible the application should include a request for a specific amount and be supported with quotes for the costs needed and/or written support from a social worker or other welfare agency. Applications must include evidence of financial need.

Grants are also made to individuals for education and for community projects.
