The National Benevolent Charity

Eligibility

To be eligible for assistance, an applicant must have been resident in the UK for the last 24 months and should be of the age to qualify for the state retirement pension, or be unable to work because of exceptional circumstances, such as chronic sickness, disability or some other misfortune and must be able to show substantial financial need.

As a general rule, a single applicant for a regular payment should have income, after housing costs have been paid, of less than £8000pa and a couple income of less than £12000pa. Higher levels will apply to applications for single payments. Also a single applicant should have assets, excluding any house or flat they occupy, of no more than £10000 and a couple assets of no more than £15000. All income including that from disability benefits is taken into account. The charity expects applicants to be in receipt of all state benefits to which they may be entitled and it also expects applicants to have applied for assistance to any benevolent charities with which they may have a professional or industrial link. For example, a nurse should have first applied to the several benevolent charities founded to support nurses in need and a civil servant should first have applied to the Civil Service Benevolent Fund etc.

It is also expected that applicants will have first considered options such as approaching other members of the family, particularly working sons and daughters and taking advantage of equity release schemes. However, it is important to appreciate that charities' funds are very limited and that meeting the eligibility criteria is no guarantee that any grant or payment can be made.

Exclusions

No grants are available for nursing home top up fees.

Type of grants

Recurrent grants of up to £15 per week for single persons and £20 for couples in receipt of the state retirement pension (£20 and £25 respectively for those not in receipt of the state pension) to allow people to live in their own homes in comfort and warmth. They are paid quarterly in March, June, September and December. One-off grants are also available for unexpected household costs and other items.

Applications

On a form available to download from the website including full income and expenditure details. Applications can be submitted either directly by the individual or through a third party such as a social worker. Help is available from the welfare officer should there be any problems in completing the form.

Other information
