Cash grants are never made directly to the individual; the grant is either paid via a third party such as social services, or the trust pays for the item directly and donates the item to the individual. Trustees meet 6 times a year usually in January, March, May, July, September and November (exact dates available on the website) and applications should be submitted at least 2 weeks beforehand.

British Association of Former United Nations Civil Servants Benevolent Fund

Former employees of the United Nations organisation or its specialised agencies and their dependants who are in need. Applicants must be resident in the UK, but do not have to be UK nationals.

Eligibility

Former employees of the United Nations organisation or its specialised agencies and their dependants who are in need. Applicants must be resident in the UK, but do not have to be UK nationals.

Type of grants

One-off grants, grants in kind and loans of between £100 and £500. Grants can be made towards a wide range of needs, including health and convalescence needs, help in the home, living costs, electrical goods, furniture, aids for older people or those who are disabled and assistance towards hospital visits. Loans include those to people who are recently widowed, prior to establishing their pension rights.

Applications

On an application form available from the BAFUNCS website. Applications are normally referred to appropriate BAFUNCS registered welfare officer for immediate follow-up. Applications are considered throughout the year.

The fund is also known by its short title, 'BAFUNCS Benevolent Fund'.

Type of grants

One-off grants of around £100, possibly up to £250 in exceptional circumstances. Recent grants have included support for people trying to make a fresh start, the purchase of disability aids such as wheelchairs or hoists and contributions towards the cost of a carer to accompany an individual on holiday.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, submitted preferably through a recognised referral agency such as a GP, health visitor, priest or minister, social worker or care worker. Details of what the money is for, how it will help and any other funding applied for should also be included in the application.
