Weekly grants to supplement low income and one-off grants towards, for example, telephone costs, televisions, fuel payments, respite holidays and capital items. Special one-off payments have also been made to help beneficiaries with fuel bills during exceptionally cold periods.

The trust is managed by, and derives its income from, Lady Elizabeth Hastings Estate Charity. The trust also gives yearly grants of £3,000 to designated local schools.

The Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust

People in need who have worked in the cotton textile industry in the north west of England. This includes weaving, spinning and dyeing. Cotton industry workers who were badly injured while fighting for HM Forces in wartime may also be eligible.

People in need who have worked in the cotton textile industry in the north west of England. This includes weaving, spinning and dyeing. Cotton industry workers who were badly injured while fighting for HM Forces in wartime may also be eligible.

Exclusions

People who have worked with clothing, footwear, hosiery and other man-made fabrics are not eligible.

Type of grants

Convalescence grants are available to people who are in poor health or who have suffered injury due to their work in the cotton textiles industry. One-off grants are also awarded for specific needs.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Please note that the correspondent cannot send forms directly to applicants, just to employers, trade unions, SSAFA or similar welfare agencies for them to pass on to potential beneficiaries. Applicants must show that they have worked in the textile industry and provide medical evidence if claiming assistance due to employment injury or disability. Applications are considered quarterly.

Other information

The trust gives substantial grants to educational bodies to assist eligible students in furthering their textile studies, to other bodies which encourage recruitment into or efficiency in the industry and to organisations furthering the interests of the industry by research and so on.

The Public and Commercial Services Union Benevolent Fund

Members and Associate members of the Union who are suffering severe financial hardship. Applications will be rejected if the individual is not a fully paid-up members, or Associate Members, of the union.

Eligibility

Members and Associate members of the Union who are suffering severe financial hardship, through sickness, family troubles or other problems. Applications will be rejected if the individual is not a fully paid-up member, or associate member, of the union.

Exclusions

No grants are given for help with private legal or medical expenses. No grants are given for credit card debts, overdrafts, loans, educational costs or strike action. Loans are not made.

Type of grants

One-off grants to a maximum of £500 in any 12 month period.

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Completed applications should be submitted either directly by the individual or a family member, or through a third party such as a union representative and may be emailed or posted. They are reviewed weekly.

The Barristers’ Benevolent Association

The dependants of past or present practising members of the Bar in England and Wales, who are in need.

Eligibility

Past or present practising members of the Bar and their dependents, in England and Wales, who are in need.

Exclusions

School fees are only paid in exceptional circumstances such as if the student is facing imminent examinations.

Type of grants

Educational grants for dependants are only given in the most exceptional circumstances, for example where the death or disability of a barrister leaves his or her children stranded in mid-education. Grants or loans are given to schoolchildren towards books, educational outings, maintenance or school uniforms or clothing; students in further/higher education for help with books, fees and living expenses; mature students for books, travel, fees or childcare; and people starting work for books, equipment, clothing and travel. Loans are also available.

On a form available from the website. Applications are considered throughout the year and should include the name and address of the chambers where they last practised as a barrister.

Grants are also made for welfare purposes.

Applications for fees or maintenance are never supported. Cash grants are not given.

Type of grants

Grants are given to students in further and higher education to help with the cost of fees, books or specialised equipment. Grants to support music education are also made.

Application forms can be collected from the correspondent in late August/early September and should be submitted for consideration in November. Replies will be sent out in December.

The charities receive income from Sir Thomas White’s Charity, including the allocation for the Sir Thomas White’s Loan Fund in Coventry. Grants are also made for welfare purposes.
