The Queen’s Nursing Institute

Financial assistance for NMC qualified nurses who work or have worked in the COMMUNITY rather than in hospitals. (Queen's Nurses, District Nurses, Practice nurses, community nurses, health visitors, school nurses, etc. suffering hardship through illness, disability or other life trauma.

Eligibility

Nursing and Midwifery Council registered nurses who work or have worked in the community (not hospitals) for a minimum of three years.  Also health care assistants who work or have worked in the community (not hospitals) under the supervision of a qualified nurse for a minimum of five years.  Help is available in times of sickness, disability or other life trauma which lead to financial difficulties.

Exclusions

No grants for residential or nursing home fees, overdrafts/debt, education costs, private health care or funeral expenses.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants ranging to help with household essentials, building repairs and adaptations, specialist aids and equipment.

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Applications can be submitted by the individual, or through a recognised referral agency (social worker, Citizens Advice or doctor) or other third party.

The Richmond Parish Lands Charity

Students above school age who are in need and have lived in Richmond, Kew, Ham, Petersham, North and East Sheen or Central Mortlake (NOT the whole borough of Richmond) for at least six months prior to application and have no other possible sources of help.

Eligibility

People above school age who are in need and have lived in the TW9, TW10 or SW14 areas of Richmond for at least six months prior to application and have no other possible sources of help.

Exclusions

No grants to schoolchildren.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants to help people obtain vocational, professional or academic qualifications or to retrain after employment. Grants can range from £50 towards course books to larger recurrent grants over several years for course fees.

Applications

On a form available from the Clerk to the Education Committee, to be submitted directly by the individual. This includes details of current employment, income and expenditure, details of the course/expenses applied for and a statement in support of the application. Two references are required and applicants are usually asked to attend an interview. Applications should be based on financial need and parental income is taken into account up to the age of 25 years. There are two trusts which are also administered by the Richmond Parish Lands Charity:

The Benevolent Fund of the Engineering Employers’ Federation (including the Dyer Memorial Funds)

In order to be eligible the relevant employee should be or have been employed in a position of trust and this is normally taken to mean under-foreman or equivalent status.'

Exclusions

The fund does not give loans.

Type of grants

Grants fall into the following categories:
(i) Income grants, where the applicant's income, after certain deductions, has fallen below the equivalent of a state pension (this can be increased when the applicant is elderly, infirm or has dependants). These grants range from £200 to £1,040.
(ii) Property grants, generally for modifications to the applicant's home due to their physical condition.
(iv) Bereavement grants, payable in respect of the death of an employee or their spouse, to assist with funeral costs.
(v) Mobility grants to help applicants in need of a wheelchair or to adapt other forms of transport.

Applications

The fund no longer issues grants to new applicants. It instead continues to fund its current grant recipients.

The Denny Care and Relief Fund (Brain Tumour UK)

Brain tumour patients, their carers, family and friends.

Exclusions

No retrospective grants or grants for anything for which a Macmillan grant has already been awarded for. Funds will also not be provided for debts, household adaptations or medical treatment. Help with hospital discharge will only be funded in exceptional circumstances.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £300 to help increase independence and quality of life. Grants have been given for white goods, holidays and trips, clothing, computers, kindles and so on. Applications for wheelchairs and other mobility equipment will only be considered if you can demonstrate that you have exhausted all statutory options.

Applications

On an application form available to download from the website. Part of the form must be completed by a medical professional such as your GP or consultant. Applications are usually processed within 14 days.

The Edinburgh Merchant Company Endowment Trust

People in need who are over the age of 55 and live in Edinburgh or Midlothian. Help may also be given to younger individuals who are certified on medical grounds as unable to earn their living.

Type of grants

The majority of funding is given in bi-annual pensions of about £500 per person. However, one-off cash grants and gifts in kind for household goods are also available.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications can be submitted at any time either directly by the individual, through a third party such as a social worker, or through an organisation such as Citizens Advice. The trust employs an almoner who assesses need and reports to the trust prior to any grant being made.

The trust also provides almshouse accommodation.

Arthur Ingram Trust

People aged between 14 and 21 and in full time education who are in need and live in the Medway council area.

Eligibility

People aged between 14 and 21 and in full time education who are in need and live in the Medway council area.

Type of grants

Grants are made from three funds:
(i) The general grant scheme is for students aged between 14 and 16 whose parents are on a low income and need assistance with school uniform, books and towards school trips which are identified as being linked to exam-related studies. The maximum general grant is £300.

(ii) The continuing education scheme is for students aged between 16 and 18 and in financial need but who are continuing at school or in further education establishments/training. Grants are dependent on the applicant having attendance of at least 90% unless there are exceptional reasons for absence, such as long term illness (proof is required). The maximum continuing education grant is £400. Students aged 19 to 21 can also be considered.

(iii) Advanced payments in kind can be made to schools/colleges for students whose courses have been recognised as requiring specialist equipment. The maximum grant is £150.

On a form available from the correspondent. Applications can be made by the individual, through a third party such as a teacher or through a school, college, or educational welfare agency. Continuing education applications should be submitted between July and March; bursaries can be applied for from April to June. General grants can be submitted at any time and are considered on an ongoing basis. Each application is means tested and evidence of income is required with every application.

The trust also gives emergency grants to school voluntary funds.

Kelsick’s Educational Foundation

Young people, under the age of 25, who were born or who have lived in Ambleside, Grasmere, Langdale or part of Troutbeck (the Lakes Parish) for at least four years. There is a preference for children/students with special needs.

Type of grants

Grants are given for: extra help at school for pupils with special needs; music lessons; extracurricular activities such as performing arts and sports; hire of musical instruments; travel costs for certain educational trips; tools, equipment and extra training for apprentices or working trainees; subsistence grants for college students; computers for first year university students; and books for A-level, college and university courses. Grants are one-off and recurrent and range from £25 to £3,000.

Applications are considered in February, May, August and November - deadline dates for submission at these meetings are 31 January, 30 April, 31 July, 31 October, respectively. Applicants must list detailed costs (with receipts) of the items required. Forms should be submitted directly by the individual or by a parent/guardian if the applicant is under 18.
