British Gas Energy Trust

The Trust assists with grants to clear gas and electricity debts owed to British or Scottish Gas.

The Trust can also help with the purchase of white goods for the home or grants to clear other priority debts (e.g.debts to other utility suppliers).

Eligibility

The Trust only assists domestic customers of British Gas or Scottish Gas.

Exclusions

The Trust cannot help with the following:

Fines for criminal offences; overpayments of benefits; educational or training needs; business debts;debts to central government departmetns;credit cards or other forms of non-secured lending;medical equipment;aids and adaptations;deposits to secure accommodation;or holidays.

 

Type of grants

Successful applicants will be awarded a one-off payment to clear their gas or electricity debts owed to British/Scottish Gas.

Delivery of household items will be arranged with the applicant, or a cheque for a specified purpose will be provided.

A local money advice agency such as Citizens' Advice Bureau may be able to provide help in completing the form.

Other information

Those in receipt of an award from the Trust cannot reapply for two years. Applicants who do not receive an award can reapply after six months.

Barchester Healthcare Foundation

The foundation aims to assist Individuals and Small community groups and charities based in England, Scotland or Wales along with Older people 65+, Adults (18+) with a physical disability and Adults (18+) with a mental disability.

Eligibility

Exclusions

Grants are not available for debts, daily living costs, general property repairs or improvements.

Applicants must have approached their Local Authority first to check if statutory funding is available.

Type of grants

One-off grants are given to enhance the quality of life for an individual.

Grants range from £100 up to £5,000.

Applications

Application forms can be completed or downloaded from the foundations website. All applications must be supported and completed by a third party sponsor. A sponsor could be, for example, a health/ personal care professional, social worker or charity/ support group representative.

Applicants can re-apply three years after receiving a grant.

Other information

The foundation favours applications that encourage a person’s mobility, independence and improved quality of life. Our grants range from £100 up to £5,000.

Be the Boss

'Be the Boss' is a service from the Royal British Legion with Poppyscotland. It is aimed at supporting UK service leavers to plan, fund and grow their own small businesses.

Funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Legion and its partner organisations offers:

  • Training in small business set up
  • Assistance in writing a business plan and financial forecast
  • Funding to assist in the launch or growth of a business
  • Periodic health checks and business mentoring to applicants from across the UK.

The programme is open to anyone who left active service in the UK Armed Forces and intends to start up or grow a small business in the UK.

Eligibility

The scheme is open to fomer members of HM Armed Forces (including members of the Reserve Forces).

This includes former Reservists who were on mobilised service in accordance with the Reserve Forces Act 1996.

Applicants must be legally resident in the UK, register their business in the UK and meet additional eligibility criteria.

Existing businesses seeking funding must have been trading for no more than two years.

Residents or businesses outside the UK are not eligible.

Exclusions

Our Loan Funds are likely to provide finance for any purpose related to developing a sound business:

  • Refinancing of existing debt is only permitted where existing commercial finance is being withdrawn or where the purpose of refinancing is to improve the cash flow of the borrower
  • Some purposes will not be considered sound for a business, including but not exclusively, purchase of a vehicle (unless an integral part of the business), funding for trips abroad, funding for research, product development or some forms of training.
  • The Fund will not provide loans for political purposes or any activity which may bring the Fund into disrepute, such as pornography, gambling etc..

In addition, ineligible businesses are those whose principal activities include:

  • dealing in land
  • commodities
  • futures or securities
  • banking
  • insurance
  • money lending
  • debt factoring
  • hire purchase financing
  • leasing
  • financing
  • other financial activities
  • the performane of road transport for hire or reward
  • primary production of agricultural produts or in the processing and marketing of agricultural products
  • coal sector.
Type of grants

Funding for successful 'Be the Boss' applicants will be based upon their business or growth plan and financial forecast, as well as the type and status of their business ('start up' versus 'established').

Funding will be provided in £500 increments, where 25% of the total is a grant, and the remainder 75% is a loan.

  • New businesses with low to moderate start up costs (documented by their business plan) will be initially eligible fore 'Access' funding (£4,000 and below)
  • New businesses with moderate to high start up costs will be initially eligible for 'Aspire' funding (£7,500 and below)
  • Existing businesses (trading between 13-24 months) will be eligible for 'Accelerate' funding (up to £30,000).

'Be the Boss' is an online service and as such we only accept electronic applications.

Other information

The Legion will continue to provide a central point of contact for service leavers, their families and dependents who may not be eligible for assistance under the 'Be the Boss' scheme. This includes direct grants from the Legion and referral to other agencies and programmes that may be able to provide assistance, advice and funding for enterprise.

Bishop Wordsworth’s Educational Trust

Type of grants

Grants can be given to help with the cost of books, educational outings, educational tuition and music tuition. There is a preference for schoolchildren with serious family difficulties and schoolchildren with special education needs. Grants are not made for school fees or maintenance costs.

Applications

Applications should be made by the parent or guardian to the correspondent. Information required includes applicant’s name, occupation of guardian/parent, address, date of birth, name of school, educational expenses, details of income of applicant’s parent/guardian (i.e. financial status), amount applied for, for how long, source of other funds available, reasons for application, details of other children in family, church affiliation and a reference from the parish priest. Applications are usually considered around March and October. Telephone enquiries are welcomed.

Other information

Grants are also made to church schools in the diocese for Christian educational resources.

Alchemy Charitable Trust (ACT)

Alchemy Charitable Trust assists families and individuals living in East Sussex facing exceptional need.

Eligibility

Residents of East Suusex who meet the following criteria:

Be facing exceptional need

Have tried to help themselves and have been unable to obtain funding from other sources

Have the support of a professional, such as a social worker,health worker, minister of religion, police officer, teacher or Citizens Advice worker.

Exclusions

Any requests that should be met by statutory provision.

Type of grants

The provision of goods, services or financial grants to meet a specific need.

Applications

Signed application forms (available on the Alchemy Charitable Trust website) which can be either posted or scanned and emailed to the Trust Administrator.

A counter-signature will be required from an appropriate professional.

Other information

ACT has been established to help residents of East Sussex who are facing exceptional need and can show that they have been unable to find assistance from other sources. Information regarding their financial position will be required.

We offer free medical assessments for professional/ semi-pro and student performing artists or stage/production crew. We also provide information on health practitioners that work with performing artists.

This includes:

  • Actors
  • Ballet dancers
  • Commercial dancers

You must be a professional/ semi-pro or student performing artists or stage/production crew looking for help with a health issue caused by performance or preventing you from performing

Exclusions

We do not help amateur performers. Must be working in the UK
