The Royal Blind Society for the UK

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £200 (one per household) and annual grants of £208 per annum (one per household), running for three year periods. Grants can be made towards: household bills; specialist medical equipment such as thick-lens spectacles; daily living aids such as a washing machine with Braille controls; IT equipment, reading and literacy aids for young visually impaired people; holidays within the UK; and, other emergencies and unforeseen needs.

The society website notes that grants are not usually made where the household disposable income exceeds £104 per week for the first person, or £182 per week for the first two persons. For any other person in the household add an additional £47 per week.

Applications are review quarterly. Requests for one-off grants must include a quotation for the goods/services for which a donation is sought. The society offer informal advice on the application process and applicants should contact

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Applications must be submitted through a professional welfare worker who knows the applicant well, for example, a social worker or similar welfare advisor. They are considered on a quarterly basis.

The society also provides holidays and breaks for beneficiaries, with £998,000 spent providing breaks in 2009/10.

sfgroup Charitable Fund for Disabled People

Severely disabled people of all ages, primarily in the Midlands and North West. This can include people with significant sensory, physical and intellectual impairments and those with complex and challenging behavioural needs.

Eligibility

Payments for or towards specific items or services which will make a 'positive' difference to the quality of life of individuals or groups.

Exclusions

No grants for: education and course fees; debts; motor vehicle purchase or expenses; nursing and residential home fees; funeral expenses; removal expenses; driving lessons; items already purchased; therapies such as swimming with dolphins and hyperbaric therapy; alternative therapies such as reflexology, acupuncture and faith healing.

Type of grants

Applications are treated on their merit. There is no official upper limit to the amount offered, however grants of above £5,000 would be relatively rare.

Previously, grants have been given for special clothing, footwear, mattresses and beds, indoor/outdoor wheelchairs, mobility scooters, kitchen equipment, a Meywalker and structural ammendments to houses and living areas.

Applications

Applications are welcomed from individuals, professional workers and representatives of organisations and institutions. Where the request is from a private individual, a detailed letter of support from a professional (e.g. family doctor, hospital consultant, social worker, teacher or a worker from a community or disability organisation) is essential. If applying for specialist seating, manual or powered wheelchairs are requested, the letter must be from an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.

Applicants should first complete a short preliminary enquiry form. This can be done online at the sfgroup website, or by completing the form attached to the charity's information leaflet which can be requested by phone or email. The Fund Manager will make contact within two weeks of receiving the application to discuss the request in more detail.

The Sheffield Grammar School Exhibition Foundation

People who live in the city of Sheffield and have done so for at least three years (this excludes residency for educational purposes).

Type of grants

Grants can be given to people starting work for fees, living expenses, books, equipment, childcare, clothing or travel. The trust will occasionally give towards schoolchildren's educational outings. Funds are also available for medical electives, field trips, gap year activities, sports and musical training.

There is a preference for people who are attending or have attended King Edward VII School. Grants are also given for the benefit of the school.

In writing to the correspondent. Applications are considered in March, July, October and December and should be submitted either directly by the individual or through their school, college or educational welfare agency.

Pawnbrokers in need who have been in the business for at least five years, and their dependents. Help is mainly given to people over 60 but assistance may also be available to younger people if there is sufficient need.

The Amber Trust

Helps blind and partially sighted children with a love or talent for music by paying for music lessons, instruments, music therapy, music software and travel to musical events.

Eligibility

Children and young people (up to and including the age of 18) who are blind or partially sighted.

Exclusions

No retrospective grants.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants of up to one year to pay for music lessons, music therapy, musical instruments, music software, concert tickets or for travel to musical activities. After one year parents may apply again but using a re-application form which allows the trust to monitor the impact of their funding.

Applications

On an application form available to download from the trust website. Applications should be completed by the child's parents or carers, but can be prepared by a support worker or teacher. Applications for instruments or software should include prices and supplier details. Applications for lessons or music therapy sessions must include details of the teacher's or therapists qualifications, experience and CRB clearance.

Trustees meet three times a year in March, July and November. Applications should be received by the trust by the month preceding the meeting to be considered. Receipt of applications will be acknowledged in writing.

Parents or carers re-applying must use a different re-application form, also available on the website.

Mobility Trust

People with disabilities.

Eligibility

People with disabilities.

Type of grants

No grants are given. The trust provides powered wheelchairs or scooters for people who are unable to obtain such equipment through statutory sources or afford it themselves. If someone is unable to walk at all and requires a powered wheelchair they should apply to their local NHS Wheelchair Service before making an application to the trust.

Applications

Applications must be submitted in the first instance by a letter directly by the individual or through a social worker, medical advisor or other welfare agency. The letter should explain why the person needs the equipment, detailing any disabilities and their cause. If there is a possibility of helping the person they will be sent a form to complete. On confirmation of acceptance of the application the trust will arrange for an independent occupational therapist to assess the person in order that they receive the right equipment to suit their clinical need.

The trust insures the equipment for the first year but expects the beneficiary to take over the payments in the second year. Servicing and repairs will be their responsibility following the expiry of the warranty period.

The Talisman Charitable Trust

The Charity assists those living in the UK and occasionally assists charities with similar objectives.

The Charity assists with the relief of poverty, which includes grants for education, health, housing, disablement or disability.

The Charity requires applications to be supported by another charitable organisation, local authority or Citizens' Advice Bureau.

The Charity does not have any restrictions in relation to their grant criteria.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent through a social worker, Citizens Advice or similar third party.

Applications should be on headed paper and include the individual’s full name and address, a summary of their financial circumstances, what is needed and how much it will cost. A brief history of the case and a list of any other charities approached should be included as well. Supporting evidence such as medical documentation, a letter from the applicant’s school and written quotations would also be helpful. Applications are considered throughout the year. Only successful applications will receive a reply.

Please note: applications should not be sent by recorded delivery or any ‘signed for’ services.
