The Sheila Kay Fund

People in need living in Merseyside who have a background in the voluntary sector.

Eligibility

People in need living in Merseyside who have a background in the voluntary sector.

Exclusions

No grants for postgraduates.

Type of grants

One-off and recurrent grants are made ranging between £50 to £300 for people engaged in social, youth and community work (paid or voluntary) who cannot afford the relevant education or training. Priority is given to those who have left school with few, if any, qualifications, and people from minority communities who have experienced difficulties in entering education. Any of the costs of education, including childcare, travel expenses and books, can be considered.

The trust helps people at a wide variety if educational stages, including Higher Education in social work and youth work, Access courses, GNVQ's, GSE's, counselling qualifications, introductory courses to Maths, English and IT, and Community courses such as Credit Union, Playwork and Capacity Building.

Applications

Applications should be made at least six weeks before the grant is required. Exemptions from this may be made in emergencies. Application forms are available from the correspondent. Applications are considered all year round.

Other information

As the basic aim of the fund is to promote opportunities for the development of skills for community activists, it also offers education advice.

"Help is also extended to community groups who may want to attend a conference (such as credit
unions), or who manage community projects where new legislation has necessitated training for their
volunteers, or who wish to stage training events for their local community."

Norwood (formerly Norwood Ravenswood)

Mostly Jewish children and their families, although one-quarter of their clients are of mixed faith. This is a national trust but concentrates on London and the south east of England.

British undergraduates and postgraduates studying the Turkish and Black Sea littoral in all academic disciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences. Scholars from Turkey and the countries surrounding the Black Sea who are studying in the UK can also be supported. Applicants for travel and conference grants must be based at a UK university or academic institution.

Type of grants

The trust gives grants for the following purposes:

  • Travel grants – up to £500 to students in the fields of arts, humanities and social sciences for travel to and around Turkey and the region of the Black Sea littoral.
  • Study grants – comprising of an airfare (£300) and funding for basic subsistence and accommodation (£500 per month) for individuals carrying at doctoral or postdoctoral research in the arts, humanities and social sciences relating to Turkey and the Black Sea littoral
  • Fieldwork grants – up to £400 to enable an undergraduate or postgraduate fieldwork project that relates to Hellenic studies in its widest sense
  • Conference grants - up to £500 to support conferences, day-schools, workshops and seminars in the fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences relating to Turkey and the Black Sea littoral. Grants are mainly intended to be used to pay the travel expenses of speakers.

The Emanuel Hospital Charity

Members of the Church of England who are over 56 years old and have lived in the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Hillingdon or Westminster for at least two years.

Eligibility

Needy persons of 60 years of age or older who have lived in the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Hillingdon or Westminster for at least two years.

Type of grants

Pensions of £1020 a year are paid in monthly instalments along with a Christmas ‘bonus’ of £85 per person. One-off grants are also available for essential household items.

Applications

Application forms can be obtained from the City of London website and should be returned along with evidence of income such as benefit award notices, a copy of your birth certificate and two written testimonials confirming your eligibility and need for assistance, at least one of which must be from someone other than a friend or relative. Applications should be submitted directly by the individual.

The charity publicises its activities and details of pension vacancies in local papers, through welfare agencies and churches within the beneficial areas.

The National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease

People in need who have ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease or related inflammatory bowel diseases, and their carers.

Eligibility

People in need who have ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease or related inflammatory bowel diseases, and their carers.

Exclusions

Ongoing grants for needs such as heating and food are not usually made.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £300 to meet special needs which have arisen as a direct result of illness. For example, funding has been given for washing machines, refrigerators, telephone installation, clothing, beds and bedding and recuperative holidays.

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. The form has two extra sections, one which should be completed by a doctor to confirm the individual's illness and one to be filled in by a social worker (or health visitor, district nurse or CAB advisor). Completed applications should be sent to the personal grants fund secretary at: PO Box 334, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 2WA.

Other information

The association also operates a Young Persons' Assistance Scheme which helps to meet special vocational and educational needs arising from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the association's main role is to provide information and advice to people living with IBD.
