Type of grants

Grants of up to £60, usually recurrent, are given to: schoolchildren towards educational outings; students in further/higher education for books, fees/living expenses, study/travel abroad and student exchanges; and mature students towards books and travel.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, for consideration in March, June, September or December. Applications should be submitted in the preceding month directly by the individual or through the relevant school/college/educational welfare agency or through another third party and signed by the applicant. For recurrent grants, applicants must reapply each academic year.

Young people under 25 who live or have firm family connections with the former county of Humberside and North Lincolnshire. The trust also gives to former Hesslewood Scholars.

'Applicants must be in need, but must show their resolve to part fund themselves.'

Exclusions

Loans are not made.

Type of grants

One-off grants, typically up to £1,000, are given towards: books, school uniforms, educational outings and maintenance for schoolchildren; books for students in higher and further education; and equipment and instruments and clothing for people starting work.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, accompanied by a letter from the tutor or an educational welfare organisation (or from medical and social services for a disability grant). Applications can be submitted by the individual, through their school, college or educational welfare agency, or by another third party such as the Citizens Advice bureau or health centre. Details of the applicant's and parental income must be included, along with an indication of the amount the applicant will contribute and a contact telephone number. Applications are considered in February, June and September.

The Mark Davies Injured Riders’ Fund

People injured in horse-related accidents (excluding professional and amateur jockeys and those injured in the horse racing industry).

Eligibility

People injured in horse-related accidents (excluding professional and amateur jockeys and those injured in the horse racing industry) and their carers.

Type of grants

One-off cash grants and grants in kind according to need; loans are also made. Recent grants have been given towards wheelchairs, special beds, house adaptations, stair lifts, physiotherapy, stable help and other living costs.

Applications

In writing to the correspondent at any time. All applicants are visited by a local fund volunteer to discuss their medical and financial needs. A report is then made to the trustees, who will consider whether or not to award a grant.

Other information

The fund also offer legal and medical advice as well as providing practical advice on rider safety issues and producing a number of help sheets on the subject. These are available to download from the website.

The Mitchell City of London Charity

Men over 65 and women over 60 who are in need and who live or work, or have lived or worked, in the City of London for at least five years. Widows of men so qualified may also apply. Welfare grants are also given to help the homeless at Christmas

The MacDougall Trust

People In Need, living in the County of Dorset only

Eligibility

People in need who live in Dorset.

Exclusions

Grants for education, sponsorship, childcare, debt, people living outside of Dorset or to organisations.

Type of grants

One-off grants of up to £250 for all kinds of personal need. Only in exceptional circumstances will more than £250 be awarded, though the trust can contribute towards larger projects which will be jointly funded.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the trust’s website. Applications should be supported by a recognised agency such as, Citizens Advice, local GP, social services or similar organisation. Forms should be returned to the administrative secretary. Applications are considered quarterly - usually in March, June, September and late November/early December - though urgent requests may be considered between meetings. For consideration at a quarterly meeting applications should be received the month before.

Please note: if the application is being made on behalf of a minor, then details of the whole family will need to be included.

The Deeping St James United Charities

College and university students from the parish of St James, Deeping.

Eligibility

College and university students from the parish of St James, Deeping.

Type of grants

All young university (or equivalent) students are given an annual grant towards the cost of their studies for three years. The grant may be used for books or equipment needed for study towards a degree or vocational qualification, such as scissors for hairdressing or knives for a chef, for example.

In order to qualify, applicants should normally be aged 18 to 25 years, be studying for their first degree or college qualification and be resident in Deeping St James (including Frognall).

Applications

A PDF form can be downloaded from the website and returned by post or in person to The Institute. Applicants starting Higher Education during the autumn term should apply for their grant as soon as a place has been awarded and their entry qualifications confirmed.

Other information

This trust also gives grants to individuals for relief-in-need purposes and local organisations.
