The foundation currently administers three funds which provide grants to individuals for education:

The John Goore Fund: Up to £350 for the advancement of higher education and training, particularly adults who need to retrain after a period of unemployment or redundancy.

The Joseph Harley Bequest Fund: Education and training of residents of Formby.

Sefton Education and Learning Fund: Up to £250 for educational materials and courses for residents of Sefton.

The foundation administers funds for a variety of purposes, which are mostly for organisations; however there are a few which give to individuals but they tend to open and close regularly, therefore potential applicants should contact the foundation directly for the most recent updates.

Cornwallis Memorial Fund

Help for people in need who live in Kent.

The Charity is no longer able to assist with grants due to lack of funding.

Eligibility

People in need who live in Kent. Only those who were born in, or have lived in Kent for some time will be considered.

Type of grants

One-off grants of £50 to £300.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent, on receipt of an sae. Applications can be made either directly by the individual, or through a social worker, Citizens Advice or other third party. Applicants should provide as much detail as possible, including extra information sheets with the application as relevant.

Ambulance Services Benevolent Fund

The Fund is for former or current NHS ambulance personnel and their dependants. If retired it must be due to age or medical reasons.

Eligibility

Present and former ambulancemen/women, who have been employed by the NHS ambulance services of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland (North or South) and the Channel Islands, and their dependants. If retired, it must be for age or medical reason. People who only served for a couple of years before seeking other employment for the rest of their working life are not usually considered.

Type of grants

One-off grants of £100 to £1,000 are awarded to relieve genuine hardship, poverty or distress, or to assist medically.

Applications

Applications are considered throughout the year and should be made in writing to the correspondent either directly by the individual, or by a recognised referral agency (social worker, Citizens Advice, doctor or ambulance officer/manager). The application should include: age, length of service with dates, specific details of hardship, support received from other agencies and other relevant financial or other information to support the claim. Applications are considered on demand.

The Chartered Institute of Journalists Orphan Fund

Orphaned children of institute members who are in need, aged between 5 and 22 and in full-time education.

Eligibility

Orphaned children of institute members who are in need, aged between 5 and 22 and in full-time education.

Type of grants

Grants are given to schoolchildren towards the cost of school clothing, books, educational outings and school fees. Grants are also given to students in further or higher education towards the cost of books, help with fees/living expenses and study or travel abroad. Grants are also given for birthdays, Christmas and summer holidays.

Applications

Applications should be submitted by the child's surviving parent or other third party. Applications are considered quarterly.

This fund also gives grants for relief-in-need purposes.

The Children’s Boot Fund

Schoolchildren in the city of Coventry, aged 4 to 16.

Eligibility

Schoolchildren in the city of Coventry, aged 4 to 16.

Type of grants

Grants for school footwear for children in need. No other type of help is given. Grants are made direct to footwear suppliers in the form of vouchers.

Applications

Application forms are available from schools in the area and should be completed, verified and signed by the headteacher of the child's school. Applications are considered four times a year.

The Christ Church Exhibition Fund

Boys and girls over the age of 11 who live in the city of Bristol and are attending fee-paying school

Eligibility

(i) Boys and girls over the age of 11 who live in the city of Bristol and are attending fee-paying schools. Assistance is not, however, given on first entry to fee-paying education. Grants for schoolchildren are calculated in relation to family income and actual fees. (ii) Students in higher education up to the age of 25 who have received at least two years' secondary education in Bristol or who have long residential connections with the city.

Exclusions

Grants are not given for trips abroad, for courses outside the UK or for postgraduate study.

Type of grants

(i) Grants, generally between £200 and £1,000 a year, for fee-paying secondary education, where parents are unable to maintain payments because of changed family or financial circumstances. Grants are to help with the cost of school uniforms, other school clothing, books and educational outings.

Occasional help is given to talented pupils at state schools who need help to pay for music lessons.

(ii) Grants of between £100 and £300 a year to students unable to obtain discretionary awards or for higher education courses not qualifying for grants. Grants are awarded only for courses in the UK. Grants can be to help with the cost of books and help with fees and living expenses.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent from Easter onwards. Applications should be submitted directly by the individual (student) or by a parent (schoolchildren). Meetings are held in June/July for junior grants, and in September for seniors. Applications should include length of residence in Bristol, how long in present school (schoolchildren) and whether a definite place offer has been received (student).

Exclusions

Grants are not normally given for the costs of further or mainstream education and only in exceptional circumstances for gap-year travel.

Type of grants

Generally one-off grants up to £500 to schoolchildren for uniforms/clothing, equipment/instruments and excursions, to college students, undergraduates and people starting work for clothing and equipment/instruments and to vocational students, mature students and those with special educational needs for uniforms/clothing, equipment/instruments and childcare.

Applications

On a form available from the correspondent or to download from the website. Applications can be submitted by the individual, through a recognised referral agency (such as Social Services or Citizens Advice) or through an MP, doctor or school. Applications are considered in March, June, September and December. The trust asks for details of family finances. A preliminary telephone call is always welcome.

Type of grants

The principal aim of the trust is to give grants to individuals in need or to organisations which provide relief, services or facilities to those in need. The trustees will, however, consider a grant towards education or training if the applicant is in need. Support can be given in the form of books, tools or in cash towards tuition fees or maintenance.

On a form available from the correspondent or downloaded from the trust's website, to be submitted directly by the individual or a family member. Applications are considered quarterly, on the second Monday in March, June, September and December.
