Disabled Facilities Grants

Applies to: England, Wales, Northern Ireland

A disabled facilities grant is a grant that you can get from your local authority for work to your home so you can live an independent life.  You can get one for things like making it easier to get in and out of your home, for example, by widening doors or providing ramps or for providing suitable bathroom or kitchen facilities.

Disabled facilities grants are available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only. If you live in Scotland, you should contact the social services department of your local authority for information on any grants that may be available.

A local authority must give you a disabled facilities grant if you meet the conditions for getting one. You can apply if you are an owner-occupier or a tenant. If you are a tenant, you have to check that you are the one responsible for doing the work. If your landlord is responsible for doing the work, you will not be able to get a grant but your landlord may be able to apply for a grant instead. There is a maximum amount of money you can get.  Contact your local authority for more details about how to apply.

Is it means-tested?

The amount of grant you get depends on your income and savings, unless the work is to meet the needs of a disabled person aged under 16, or in some cases, over 16 but under 19.
