Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit

Key information

The Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit is for people who work but are on a low income and spend money on registered or approved childcare. It does not matter whether you are working for someone else or are self-employed.

Applies to: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Age rules: You must be 16 or over

Type of benefit: Means tested

Administered by: HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

Who does it help?

The Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit is for

  • Single people who work at least 16 hours a week, or
  • Couples who both work at least 16 hours a week

who spend money on registered or approved childcare (link opens in a new window).

It is paid as part of Working Tax Credit.

How much does it pay?

You can get up to 70 per cent of what you pay in childcare, to a maximum of:

  • £175 per week for one child
  • £300 per week for two or more children.

The Childcare Element is a part of Working Tax Credit. It can't be claimed on its own.
