Income Support – information for carers

Applies to: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Who does it help?

Income Support helps people who do not have enough money to live on.

You must not be in full-time work and you will only get it if you are in the category of people who do not have to look for work.  if you are getting Carer's Allowance, or looking after a partner or child under 20 who is temporarily ill, you are in this category.

You cannot make a new claim for Income Support because you are a carer.  It has been replaced by a new benefit called Employment and Support Allowance, but if you are already getting Income Support, you will carry on getting it.
