Travel concessions

Applies to: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

If you are disabled, in England, Wales and Scotland, you have the right to free bus travel.  In Northern Ireland, you get free travel if you are registered blind or a war pensioner and half-price travel if you get certain disability-related benefits.  Conditions may apply.  Your local council may offer cheaper fares on other sorts of public transport.
If you travel by train, you may also qualify for a Disabled Person's Railcard (link opens in a new window), which entitles you and an accompanying adult to one-third off the price of a rail ticket.

If you are a disabled driver, you may get:

  • An exemption from paying road tax
  • The right to a Blue Badge, which gives you parking concessions.

Is it means-tested?

Travel concessions do not depend on your income or savings.

Apply to your local authority for more information about public transport concessions and the Blue Badge. You can find the contact details of your local council (link opens in a new window) on the Directgov website.
