Social housing

Social housing is housing that is managed by local councils and housing associations and that is provided at a fair rent. You often hear social housing referred to as council housing.

Local councils decide who is eligible for social housing – e.g. people who are homeless or living in overcrowded or unsatisfactory accommodation. Councils also give priority to those who have a local connection with the area they want to live in.
