60% median of income
A definition of relative poverty - i.e. a person's
income/resources in relation to the average amount that people in
the country they live in have (the median income level):
“The poverty line is 60% of median income level – where the
median is the level of income after direct taxes and benefits,
adjusted for household size.”
If a person's income is considerably below the median income
level, it means that they do not have the material resources to
participate fully in the country's accepted daily life.
This definition is widely used by the Government and many
organisations working with people in financial need.
