David Bowler wins the Wales Council for Voluntary Action Volunteer of the Year Award

Volunteer Visitor David Bowler

Turn2us Volunteer Visitor, David Bowler, has been awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action.

David has been volunteering for Turn2us since 2012. He covers a very large area for the charity – from Anglesey and the Snowdonia National Park to Wrexham – and has always been willing to travel great distances to undertake visits.

He became one of our volunteers after retiring from a successful career in mental health nursing. He felt he wanted to give something back to the community and that reaching out to vulnerable people in need would fit in well with his values and beliefs.

David’s background and unwavering commitment make him someone vulnerable grant applicants are happy to talk to. His willingness to listen and his caring, empathetic nature allow people to share, unburden and discuss their concerns and issues, making our grants even more effective. He has made a huge difference to the lives of applicants, many of whom have no one or cannot share the true extent of their difficult circumstances with their family or friends.

David was nominated by Elena Dickie, our Caseworker in Wales, who provided a staff perspective on his contribution to Turn2us. She explained how David has no hesitation in going over and above his role description, using his initiative to deal with difficult and potentially distressing situations.

Elena described how, from the very first time that David carried out a visit five years ago, the feedback from new applicants and regular beneficiaries has been outstanding. "They have been bowled over by his humanity, kindness and thorough understanding of their situation, as well as his genuine willingness to help."
