Turn2us welcomes extension of Local Support Grants

  • 24/06/2021

The extension of the Covid Local Support Grant will provide a much needed lifeline for people struggling with the cost of food and utility bills, although there must be a long term replacement, says national poverty charity Turn2us.

The Covid Local Support Grant has been extended through till September with an additional £160 million of funding.

Thomas Cave, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at Turn2us, said:

"We welcome the extension of the government's Covid Local Support Grant through till September. This scheme has been a vital lifeline for so many of us who have been struggling financially through the coronavirus pandemic.

"However, we are concerned that just as furlough ends, and Universal Credit is cut by £20 a week, we will also see this scheme come to a close. The end of all these important support schemes in September may turn out to be a cliff edge for millions.

"In the long run, we encourage the government to increase funding to Local Welfare Assistance Schemes. These should provide a quick and responsive way for councils to support people on low incomes and stop them from being pulled into long-term poverty. A long-term funding picture will give council's the ability to plan and create effective schemes that wrap around other support such as debt advice. This is why it is crucial for the government to review and reform the scheme and learn lessons from the Covid crisis.”
