Rescued by Cavell Nurses Trust - Dominic's Story

Share

Many of us rely on heating and hot water systems that are old and inefficient. And, because there’s often not much money to spare with ever increasing living costs, it’s difficult for us to make our homes more energy efficient and get faulty appliances replaced.

However, if you work, or have worked, as a nurse, midwife or healthcare assistant you may qualify for a grant.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust was able to come to Dominic’s rescue after his antiquated hot water system failed and left him with only cold running water. The 55 year old had worked as a nurse for 22 years until 2009 when he was forced to retire on the grounds of ill health. At the time, the cost of replacing his deceased hot water cylinder and immersion heater was just too much for Dominic to bear.

“I was struggling to pay bills as it was and when the hot water failed I just thought, well what on earth am I going to do now?”

After an internet search, Dominic discovered Cavell Nurses’ Trust, a charity that gives welfare support to nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants and students experiencing financial or personal hardship, often because of illness, domestic abuse, disability, working poverty and older age.

Due to his dedication to nursing, Dominic qualified for financial help and the Trust was able to provide him with a grant of £750 to cover the cost of the replacement cylinder and immersion heater. He was over the moon…

“I will never take hot water for granted again! What a wonderful service you provide - just when I thought no one was able to help me, your charity was there for me.”

There is nothing quite like a hot bath and Cavell Nurses’ Trust was delighted to be able to provide that for Dominic.

The Trust also provides one-off grants for general living expenses which can be used to cover household energy costs, helping people dealing with the problem of fuel poverty.
