Who we are

The Turn2us Edinburgh Trust provides grants to people struggling financially living in the City of Edinburgh. Our funds are dedicated entirely to helping local people on low incomes.    

We are part of Turn2us, the national charity that helps people in financial hardship gain access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and support services.

Can we help

If you know someone who fits our criteria below, we may be able to help.  Applicants must:

  • live within the boundaries of the City of Edinburgh Council local authority area
  • have limited accessible household savings and
  • are  on a low household income

The Edinburgh Trust could help in several ways:

  • providing  a one-off grant to meet an identified need
  • completing a welfare benefits check to ensure they’re receiving all they are entitled to
  • signposting to other sources of support.

We’ve helped thousands of people across the City of Edinburgh. Many people come to us after having had a difficult time in life such as unemployment, physical or mental illness or other problems.

The grants we give can be used to buy household items such as cookers, washing machines, beds, fridges and carpets. We can also help people meet their essential living and travelling costs and pay bankruptcy fees.

There are some things we can’t help with, these include:

  • Private medical and dental costs
  • Prescription glasses
  • University or school fees
  • Funeral costs
  • Legal fees
  • Loans
  • Business start-up costs or loans
  • Personal debts
  • Funding for full time students

How to apply

Applying for help from the Edinburgh Trust should be done by an approved organisation. This includes registered charities, housing  associations and  statutory organisations providing social care, health care, or advice services.  The application can be made by a support worker, social worker, welfare adviser, debt adviser, health visitor, housing officer, or anyone carrying out a similar role, within an organisation.

If you are an intermediary registered with an Turn2us intermediary account, you can go directly to making an online application to the Edinburgh Trust once you are logged into your intermediary's account.

Examples of how our grants have helped


Sally is a carer for her adult daughter, and is on a low income. Her Housing Support Worker helped her make an application to the Edinburgh Trust so she could secure funding. She was able to buy much needed warm clothing and meet her fuel bills over the winter months.


Mark has just moved to a new home.  He’s unable to work due to complicated health difficulties. His Housing Officer helped him make an application to us so that he could purchase a washing machine. He is now able to do his own washing and doesn’t have to make an expensive trip to a launderette every week.


Louisa is a part time cleaner on the minimum wage. Her fridge-freezer broke down and she couldn’t afford to replace it. Her Welfare Rights Adviser helped her with an application to the Trust and we were able to provide funding so she could buy a new one. She‘s now able to do a weekly grocery shop, saving her time and money.
