What is a Bereavement Payment?

A Bereavement Payment is a one-off payment for widows, widowers or surviving civil partners whose spouse or civil partner died before 6 April 2017.

If your spouse or civil partner died on or after 6 April 2017, you may be eligible for Bereavement Support Payment instead. 

Applies to: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Age rules: You must be old enough to marry or enter into a civil partnership and must usually be below state pension age

Type of benefit: Non means tested

Taxable: No
