Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - I get Disability Living Allowance (DLA), when will I move to Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

Find out more about Personal Independence Payments.

I get Disability Living Allowance (DLA), when will I move to Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

If you get Disability Living Allowance and were aged between 16 and 64 on 8 April 2013, you will eventually have to make a claim for Personal Independence Payment instead, even if you have been given an indefinite or lifetime award of Disability Living Allowance.

There will be no automatic transfer of existing Disability Living Allowance claimants on to Personal Independence Payment. At some point you will be contacted by the Department for Work and Pensions and invited to claim Personal Independence Payment. You will have to complete the Personal Independence Payment claim forms and will be assessed under the Personal Independence Payment criteria. This will probably involve a face to face assessment.

When you claim Personal Independence Payment your Disability Living Allowance will continue to be paid until the Personal Independence Payment claim has been decided, but if you do not make a claim for Personal Independence Payment within 28 days of being asked to, your Disability Living Allowance will be suspended.

If your Disability Living Allowance is suspended because no claim for Personal Independence Payment has been received, the Department for Work and Pensions will write to you again. If you do not make a claim for Personal Independence Payment within another 28 days your entitlement to Disability Living Allowance will be terminated.

When will I be contacted about claiming Personal Independence Payment?

Since 28 October 2013 assessment for Personal Independence Payment has been carried out in a gradually increasing number of areas but only for some existing Disability Living Allowance claimants.

You will have to claim Personal Independence Payment if you live in a reassessment area and:

  • you have a fixed-term award of Disability Living Allowance which is due to expire, or

  • you notify the Disability and Carers Service that there has been a change in your care or mobility needs, or

  • you turn 16

See GOV.UK's Personal Independence Payment postcode map for details of the reassessment areas so far or GOV.UK's Personal Independence Payment checker to see when you could be affected.

If you have an indefinite award of Disability Living Allowance and there is no change in your circumstances you will not be contacted before October 2015.

If you are worried about how Personal Independence Payment will affect your Disability Living Allowance award please seek advice from a benefits adviser. You can use our Find an Adviser tool to find a local one.
