Universal Credit (UC) roll-out 2015

The introduction of Universal Credit is being phased in between 2013 and 2017.

Northern Ireland was expected to be introducing Universal Credit from the summer of 2014. However, the Welfare Reform Bill (Northern Ireland) has not yet been passed so details and dates are still unknown.

See GOV.UK up to date list of Jobcentres where you can claim Universal Credit (link opens in a new window).

January 2015

From 26 January Universal Credit became available to job seekers with children in 26 more areas across the country (6 jobcentre areas began taking claims from families in November 2014). These areas are Ashton-Under-Lyne, Wigan, Oldham, Hyde, Stalybridge, Stretford, Altrincham, Southport, Crosby, Bootle, Preston, Leyland, Prestwich, Bury, Eccles, Worsley, Huyton, Kirkby, St Helens, Newton-le-Willows, Hammersmith, Bath, Rugby, Shotton, Harrogate and Inverness.

Early 2015

Work and Pensions Secretary, Iain Duncan Smith has announced that Universal Credit will be rolled out to all Jobcentres and local authorities across the country from early 2015.

This marks a significant acceleration but will still only be for new claims from single jobseekers (though a handful of jobcentres started taking claims from couples during Summer 2014 and families during November 2014 and January 2015).

Update: Latest releases suggest that by Spring 2015 1 in 3 jobcentres will be taking claims for Universal Credit rather than all jobcentres.

The areas that will see the introduction of Universal Credit between February and July 2015 have been released. Click on the link below for details of the areas and the dates they 'go live'.
