How much time do volunteers need to give?

The Visitor opportunity is a very flexible role and time commitment can vary depending on your circumstances and the geographical location of where we have people asking for our help.  However we do ask you to undertake at least four visits a year and there are lots of other ways you can get involved with our work while you are waiting to be asked to visit ie becoming a Turn2us champion to promote the work of our charity. You can also offer to help individuals complete the Elizabeth Finn Fund application form for a grant from Turn2us.

The Befriender role requires a minimum commitment of six months and involves a home visit for an hour twice a month.  The visit is arranged at a time that is mutually convenient for both parties but it does have to take place within office hours – 9.00am – 5.00pm.

The new roles that we are developing will involve different time commitments across a range of activities.

Do you reimburse expenses?

No volunteer should be out of pocket because of the help they have given us so we will always reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket travel and refreshment expenses against receipts, in line with our Volunteer Policy. Reasonable costs incurred in attending training sessions we have invited you to come to are also covered.

Will I be insured while I am undertaking my volunteering role for you?

You will be covered by our public liability insurance which will insure you against public and personal liability and accident when you volunteer with us as long as you are only undertaking the tasks outlined in your volunteer role description and are acting within any boundaries that have been explained to you during your training.

I am looking to do some volunteering on a regular basis so will your volunteering opportunities be suitable for me?

For our Visitor role we cannot guarantee the level of visits that you will be asked to undertake because we are dependent on having individuals in receipt of grants in your area.  However, we only advertise in areas where we need Visitors and if you are willing to help someone complete an application form for a grant then you will be asked to undertake more visits.  

If you live in London our Befriender opportunity provides more regular volunteering and as we develop new opportunities there will also be other ad hoc volunteering roles for you to get involved in supporting our work.

How do I know if you provide good quality volunteering?

We are proud to have achieved the national volunteer quality mark, Investing in Volunteers accreditation. It attests to the quality of our volunteer programme & management practices against a range of different indicators such as how we recruit and support volunteers. We always strive to provide our volunteers with a positive volunteer experience.

What if I can’t provide you with two referees who have known me for at least three years?

We can discuss your referees at the informal interview stage because our recruitment policy does provide alternative options that we can explore.  If you have any concerns about your ability to meet our reference requirements, please let us know when you return your application form.  Referees will usually need to be resident in the United Kingdom and cannot be a relative.

Are there other practical things to think about?

Ideally we prefer to communicate with you primarily via email but we can post information if preferred.

For the Visitor role, it would be helpful for you to have access to a car particularly in rural areas but this is not essential if you have access to good transport links. There is an element of report writing involved in this role, using a template we provide you with, so a good standard of English is required together with knowledge of Microsoft office packages ie Word.  Training for this aspect of your role is included in your initial workshop.

We reimburse volunteer’s expenses in line with our Volunteer Policy which will be shared with you during your induction.  If you choose not to claim your expenses you can always “donate” them back to us using Gift Aid, details on request.

Is there ongoing support?

We have a dedicated staff team in place to support our volunteers and we ask you  to attend an initial training workshop of approximately four hours.  Refresher training is also provided every couple of years to keep you up to date with everything you need to know to be effective in your role.  Ongoing support is provided in a number of different ways tailored to your preferences.
