Although most people living in the UK can use our Benefits Calculator, it does not work out entitlement to benefits for the following groups of people because special rules apply and the estimates may not be correct.
If you fall into one of these groups, you can use the Turn2us Find an Adviser tool to find someone locally who can advise you on your particular circumstances.
Students
If you are a student see our Studying (aged 16+) section for more information about benefit entitlement.
People aged under 18
If you are single and aged 16-17, or are in a couple where both of you are aged 16-17, see our Young Person (aged 16-17) section for more information about benefit entitlement.
If you are under 18 but your partner is older than 18, then you can use the Benefits Calculator to check entitlement to:
You will need to enter that the younger partner is aged 18. The result may not be accurate for other benefits where different rates may apply if you have a partner aged under 18.
People who are permanently in residential care, a nursing home or hospital
If you, your partner or one of your children live in a residential care home, nursing home, or are in hospital, see our Benefits and hospital guide or Benefits and care homes guide for more information about benefit entitlement.

People on strike
If you or your partner are on strike see the Gov.UK information on industrial action for more information (link opens in a new window)

UK nationals who live abroad
If you are a UK national who lives abroad, you should read the Gov.UK information on claiming benefits if you live, move or travel abroad for more information (link opens in a new window)
It can be complicated to work out what benefits you might be entitled to so the Turn2us Benefits Calculator will do this for you.
The calculator will ask you a series of questions across no more than five steps to gather the information needed to work out your possible benefits entitlement.
The questions may have answer options to choose from or may have an empty box for you to input your answer. It is designed to be an easy to use tool but if you do need help with any question you’ll find clear instructions and support by clicking on the '?' icon next to that question.
If you answer all the questions as accurately as possible the calculator will quickly build up a picture of your possible benefits entitlement. The results page will tell you which means-tested benefits and Tax Credits you may be entitled to, how much you may receive and how to make a claim.
You should make a claim for any benefits that it suggests you might be entitled to.
Before you start to use our Benefits Calculator, we suggest that you collect together the information that you need to answer the questions that you will be asked as you work your way through it.
This includes:
- Details of all your income, e.g. benefits, tax credits, earnings from employment, State Retirement Pension and occupational pensions.
- If you are married, in a civil partnership or living with someone as a couple, you will need details of your partner’s income as well. We need to know this as your benefit entitlement will be assessed as a couple.
- Details of how much money you have in savings, investments and other capital.
- How much your annual council tax bill is and whether you get any discounts, reductions or exemptions
- Details of your rent or mortgage payments
- Information about anyone else living with you, e.g. grown-up children. Are they in employment or on benefits? What is their income?
- Whether anyone receives Carer's Allowance for looking after you or anyone else in your household.
You may find it helpful to use our Benefits Calculator checklist to collect the information you need.
If you do not have the exact information, it is possible to complete the process using estimates, but please be aware that the result may not be accurate if estimates are used.
You can save the calculation at any point and come back to it later if needed.
