Portrait of older manPlans to end the compulsory retirement age of 65 by October 2011 are included in a Government consultation document, Phasing out of the default retirement age (link opens in a new window) published this week.

Currently employers can make staff retire at 65 regardless of their circumstances, but many people want to work beyond this age.

Under this consultation, which is open for comment until 21 October this year, the Government proposes to remove the default retirement age. However individual employers will be able to operate a compulsory retirement age, if they can objectively justify it (e.g. air traffic controllers and police officers).

Pensioners failing to claim welfare benefits

Pensioners are failing to claim up to £5.4 billion a year in welfare benefits, new Age UK research has indicated. This is despite the fact that many older people are struggling to make ends meet.
