Jane's Story

Share

Jane is a mother of two and was forced to stop working as a teacher, a job she loved, when tragedy hit her family. Jane’s son had been diagnosed with cancer.

With her limited income being spent on the essentials, Jane was filled with worry that she had no money spare to visit her son in the hospital. She started to get in debt and was using her credit card to pay for daily expenses.

Jane was struggling, “I was trying to get by on as little as possible but I was getting to the point where it wouldn’t be too long before I’d reached the maximum. My desperate fear the whole way through was that I was going to be in a position where I couldn’t pay my mortgage’

Following her application for financial help to Turn2us, she was awarded a £1,000 grant from the Turn2us Elizabeth Finn Fund. Jane was ‘overwhelmed’ by the charity’s response and relieved to receive financial help at this difficult time in her life.

Jane said: “You’re going from one minute thinking I am going to lose my house. How am I going to put food on the table? How am I going to see my son? And then to having that worry taken away from you is absolutely amazing.”

Since contacting Turn2us, Jane has been visiting her son in hospital and has recently started a full-time job. Although she is still working towards paying her debts, she feels more financially stable.

Jane is very appreciative of the support she has received. She said: “Really it’s quite overwhelming to be perfectly honest. When you hit an all-time low and suddenly there are people out there who are both interested in you, and able to help. People who are not judging you and are able to offer you support.”

At Turn2us, we support lots of families looking after loved ones with cancer, and people like Jane who become full-time carers overnight due to the cancer diagnosis.

It is because of support from people like you that we are able to help families like Jane’s. So, thank you very much for being part of the Turn2us family.
