Policy

We ensure the voices of people facing financial insecurity are heard by decision-makers.

Terry Jermy MP, Arvinda Gohil (Turn2us Chair of Trustees) and Tom Lawson (Turn2us Chief Executive) at launch of Stop the Stigma campaign

At Turn2us we’re committed to challenging the systems and perceptions that cause financial insecurity.

Our priorities for influencing the UK Government focus on removing stigma from the social security system by rebuilding trust in the system, and through our narrative guides promoting a pro-social security narrative. The main policy areas we are focusing on are:

  • Transforming PIP: The government should learn from Social Security Scotland and explore where PIP can replicate Adult Disability Payment. Claimants who undergo PIP assessments should be treated with dignity and respect.
  • Building a foundation for effective engagement: Reform the Jobcentre by improving work coach training, increase the amount of time work coaches have with claimants and ensure that work coaches are trained in a trauma-informed way.
  • Ending surveillance: Sanctions should be a last resort and the government must move away from using sanctions as a threat. The government should look at voluntary engagement -  where over a three-month period, work coaches can work with claimants to fully understand their barriers to work and build relationships with them.
