Who we help

We offer a wide range of practical services, helping hundreds of individuals facing a crisis, by offering emotional and financial support. We are able to assist anyone who has worked in the drinks trade.

How we help through grants

We assist on all money-related areas and can provide financial support through grants for:

  • Short-term hardship grants
  • Securing accommodation (rent and deposit)
  • Household bills
  • White goods and furniture
  • Educational grants
  • Vocational training programmes
  • Home adaptations
  • Mobility equipment
  • Convalescence
  • Funeral grants

Other ways we can assist

The Licensed Trade Charity can help people who need support in a range of other areas:

  • Health: supporting you through difficult times that might include work related stress, serious illness or managing disabilities
  • Housing: support on avoiding homelessness, guidance on finding housing, repairs for your home, access to retirement housing and advice for tenants
  • Relationships: our free telephone befriending service provides a friendly voice at the end of the phone for people feeling lonely. We can also help on coping with loss, issues arising from relationship breakdowns and family problems
  • Education and training: assistance in finding new opportunities, advice on next career steps, financial assistance in retraining and supporting your children’s schooling

Kate's story

Kate worked in the pub trade for 23 years since she was 18, and was suffering from mental health issues. Kate was subsequently signed off sick and would not leave her flat, which had damp, no carpets and a broken cooker, and her daughter was being bullied at school. She had accrued rent and council tax arrears and was not claiming any benefits.

Our response:

We awarded Kate grants to address her arrears, purchase a new cooker and carpets, and an educational grant to fund a laptop for her daughter along with details of educational bursaries at LVS Ascot, a school owned and managed by the Licensed Trade Charity. We also provided advice on what benefits she was entitled to.

The difference we made:

Kate’s mental health improved greatly, she is up to date with her rent and council tax via benefits, and is aiming to get back to work in a pub. She has a new cooker and carpets, and her daughter received a laptop and began at independent school LVS Ascot in September on a full bursary.

Kate says:

“Thanks to the Licensed Trade Charity there is light at the end of the tunnel. I’m overwhelmed by the help received by me and my daughter”.
