Elderly are missing out on benefits due to digital exclusion

People that don’t own a computer, struggle to use a computer, or have a disability that makes using a conventional computer difficult, may be missing out on benefits.

People who struggle to get online access are often the most vulnerable in society; the elderly, the disabled, and those in financial hardship.

Mike Ambery, the Money Management Officer at Liverpool Community Advice, said: “If you have any sort of impairment or you are of an elderly age it makes applying for benefits more and more difficult.

“There are people of 60 or 70 who have never used a computer. They wouldn’t know how to go online to find out if they’re entitled to anything.”

The main tools to check your benefit entitlement, such as the Turn2us Benefits Calculator, are often only accessible online – however you can also call our helpline.

In addition, applying for many benefits are done often through online applications.

Universal Credit has been criticised for leaving those without computers penniless due to its online-centric application process.

Claimants of Universal Credit are expected to apply online, manage any changes online, and communicate online. However, you can also contact their helpline:

  • Telephone: 0345 600 0723
  • Textphone: 0345 600 0743

More than one in ten adults do not have access to the internet at home which makes knowing your entitlement and accessing benefits a harder task.

If you don’t have access to the internet you can call our helpline for information on benefits and grants.
