When we talk about the environment, whose voices do we actually hear?

What I most want to say to you is this: climate action and social justice must go hand in hand. If environment policy does not actively include disabled people, people with health conditions, low-income communities, and other marginalised groups, it risks widening inequalities.

Everyone’s Environment is an alliance of social purpose and environmental groups championing community voices and life experiences.

Too often, the conversations shaping the future of the climate take place without those that are affected. People living at the intersection of poverty, race and disability are routinely excluded from the decision-making process. These marginalised communities feel the impact of environmental change most acutely. Everyone’s Environment Voices is here to change that.

What is Voices?

Voices is a strand of Everyone's Environment, a programme dedicated to empowering individuals so that their lived experiences are better reflected in the environmental space.

Through media training and storytelling skills, Voices equips people with the tools they need to advocate for themselves, influence policy, and make sure the environmental movement is truly representative.

Putting pen to paper

Working in partnership with Media Trust, Hope for the Future and HEARD, Voices has delivered media training to a cohort of 20 passionate individuals, including six of Turn2us’s co-production partners.

The results have been remarkable. Armed with practical tools and a clearer sense of how to use their own stories to drive change, our co-production partners have written directly to the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.

These letters are deeply personal accounts of how climate change has touched and continues to impact people's lives.

They speak to financial insecurity, health, housing, community, and belonging. Crucially, many of the letters shine a light on the experiences of communities who sit at the sharp end of multiple inequalities.

These accounts highlight how climate change compounds the challenges already faced by those living with financial insecurity, those from racialised communities, and those with disabilities.

Why this matters

When disadvantaged communities are given not just a seat at the table but skills and confidence, something powerful happens. Policy starts to reflect real lived experience rather than assumptions. The conversation gets richer, more honest, and more human.

Writing to the Prime Minister is one step - but it is a significant one. It says: we are here, our experiences matter, and we expect to be heard.

Voices is about building something lasting, a movement where people from all walks of life don't just witness environmental change but help shape the response to it.
