"We’re glad to see the government has recognised the significant harm posed by their proposals and made some concessions. But the huge cuts to benefits are still on the table for new claimants, who will receive less support to meet the same needs under the proposals.
"This knee-jerk approach to modifying the bill means there has been no consultation nor an impact assessment. We urge every MP to oppose the cuts and prevent this legislation passing.
"We all deserve a social security system we can be proud of; there for us when we need it, just like the NHS. That includes those who need future support, who will encounter a much harsher system that fails to meet their needs. This is clearly unfair.
"To get the system working, the government must listen. Listen to its MPs and listen to those with expertise – Disabled people and those experiencing financial insecurity – about the best ways to reform it. That way we can build a safety net which is both effective and based on dignity and respect.
"As a society, protecting and enabling people to live independently is the right thing to do, now and in the future."
